About six months ago the Administration decided to quit calling it the
"War on Terror". There was about a week with them all trying out new descriptions for our invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. Does anyone remember what justification they used at the time and why they came back to "War on Terror"? I remember Rumsfeld tossing around several different phrases but none seemed to stick. If they did not think it was a "War" back then why do they insist that they need "war powers" now"

2. Since they got caught at illegal spying, "wartime" excuse is very handy
I believe they are genuinely concerned about impeachment over the illegal wiretapping so they have put out a full court press to justify it including invoking wartime powers.

3. the "global struggle against violent extremism" and you
are right. I remember a deliberate attempt to distance themselves from the word WAR.

5. That's right.
I bet they had their GSAVE banners and backdrops all made up and ready to go and then got disappointed when the name didn't stick.

7. Didn't the rebranding of the "War on Terror" fail because Bush refused...
...to quit calling the clusterflock in Iraq a "War on Terror?"

In hindsight, maybe his insistance on calling the mess a "war" has to do with a cya about warrantless wiretapping and information gathering.

Bush couldn't claim war powers (that are greater than even the war powers legally allow) if found out about his survellence program against a "struggle."
