Updating "First they came for..." for 2006 America?
I forget who originally did it, but it was regarding Nazi Germany.

"First they came for the communists and I said nothing because I was not a communist
Then, they came for the socialists, and I said nothing because I was not a socialist
Then, they came for the trade unionists, and I said nothing because I was not a trade unionist
Then, they came for the Jews, and I said nothing because I was not a Jew
Then, they came for me, and there was nobody left to speak out for me."

How would we update that for the modern era here in the US?

Muslims (detained in Gitmo and elsewhere)
Gays (gay bashing & anti-gay marriage laws all over)
Intellectuals (college profs being blacklisted for saying things anti-Bush)

any other ideas?

Jews, communists, et al, were all definite minorities in Germany... and, while women are a "minority" their numbers are way too great.

abortion doctors maybe, with all the clinic bombings?

7. Speaking as a woman, to imagine that women are not definite
minorities...in a country without equal pay...without ever having a female president...is to be obtuse. It's not so much about "minorities" as it is about rights being taken away.

22. I had meant in terms of numbers
It was easier for the nazis to pick on Jews because their numbers were a much smaller percentage of germany in terms of population(5%? 10%?), while women (as a whole) make up more than 50% of our nation.

18. background
An early supporter of Hitler, by 1934 Niemöller had come to oppose the Nazis, and it was largely his high connections to influential and wealthy businessmen that saved him until 1939, after which he was imprisoned, eventually at Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps. He survived to be a leading voice of penance and reconciliation for the German people after World War II. His poem is well-known, frequently quoted, and is a popular model for describing the phenomenon of social chaos, as it often begins with specific and targeted fear and hatred which soon escalates out of control.

19. I find this similar to the repuke election strategy...
They hate women, so do not let them control their own health.

They hate gays, so do not let them marry.

They hate minorities, so do not let them vote.

Mission accomplished.

The problem with the original (and additions) is that most right wingers will never see themselves as being at risk for being "come for." Along the same lines as "if you have nothing to hide, what do you have to fear from police searches.

Appealing to the Bushistas with logic is bound to fail, because they do not have the capacity for logical thought.
