Daniel Ellsberg article - The Next War in Harpers
The Next War
Posted on Thursday, October 19, 2006. Originally from Harper's Magazine, October 2006. By Daniel Ellsberg.
SourcesA hidden crisis is under way. Many government insiders are aware of serious plans for war with Iran, but Congress and the public remain largely in the dark. The current situation is very like that of 1964, the year preceding our overt, open-ended escalation of the Vietnam War, and 2002, the year leading up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

In both cases, if one or more conscientious insiders had closed the information gap with unauthorized disclosures to the public, a disastrous war might have been averted entirely.

1. A war with Iran could only be justified if the Iranians did pull a truly public
open attack against the USA or a NATO country with no warning or declaration of war.

It would be suicide for the Iranians and completely destroy and credibility we have left in Europe and Asia. An ensuing ground war would be a blood bath for the Iranians as well as the US.

Were we to invade or carpet bomb Iran, who knows how Iran would react? A bloodbath for longer term revanche against the former Baath government in Iraq for the "Sunni Triangle?" War against Pakistan? Civil war in Pakistan?

Use of a nuclear weapon would end NATO, reinitiate the Cold War with China and Russia and who knows what else...

It would be the an act of madmen.

Iran has a population of 70 Million and is a quarter the size of the USA -- not a small desert plot of land with a few millions and some sheep and oil...not Kuwait.
