You people are a very bad influence....
Today I was at my doctor's office, and the receptionist had this little sticker up on her desk, proclaiming:
I got a compliment from a moron today!

My first reaction, after laughing, was "Wait a minute! That's not spelled right..."
then I caught myself and had to explain about Moran Man.
Gave her quite a laugh...

1. I used to make so much fun of Bush's grammar

I used to use his crap in sentences ironically all the time.
And then one day, I caught myself using "irregardless" in a sentence, in all seriousness :yoiks:.

7. this really can happen
I said, "Don't forget to remind me to remember." The person I said it to burst out laughing and said, "A college professor talks like that?" and I responded, yes indeed we do, and especially after reading a two-inch stack of papers of really bad writing.

Bad writing and fractured spoken English messes with the head. There's a pattern in English that we expect to hear and when it isn't heard, it makes our brain behave like a pinball machine.

Just tonight, bush served as an example of how not to do it. This article tells what kind of student he was:

http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/2004/09/16/tsurumi/index_np.html?pn=1

I was trying to point out to my students how important it is to know how to construct an argument and defend it rationally. The Salon article tells how bush's professor said he could not construct an argument. When pinned down about his logic, he would lie and said he never said that. It's never been about staying the course, you know. Never has been.

4. I was discussing the possibility of a US nuclear attack
against Iran with a friend the other day, when I caught myself saying "nucular" instead. I think I said it three or four times. I felt like such a moran!

5. there was a documentary..
last nite on either Sundance or IFC about the usage of language during Hitler's years. Interesting parallel with what's happened not only to the words, but the definitions as well....freedom ain't what it used to be.

:dunce:
