THIS IS IT PEOPLE: NJ GAY MARRIAGE LEGAL TOMORROW!
God I hope this doesn't fuck up the Democrats heading into the home stretch. I really wish they would have released this decision after the election, but there it is. NJ is almostly certainly going to legalize gay marriage. Read this and find out why.

8. I know its wikipedia but I think the story is serious....
My understanding is that its quite likely the New Jersy supreme court will rule in favor of gay unions tomorrow. Here's hoping.

11. I hope for gays everywhere that it's true. This has been
stifled for too long, and I don't care about any timing.

9. All of that info is quoted elsewhere on the internet.
Oddly enough, wikipedia has shown to be just about as accurate as "real" encyclopedias.

10. I've also seen where it's been really wrong. That's all I was
alluding to. And we're not talking about an encyclopedia (shit, when was the last time I spelled/sang that?) but current knowledge that can be tweaked. I don't trust that source.

2. see bluejersey.com for analysis of political effects
basically, this is not going to hurt any Democrat in New Jersey.

i could see it inspiring some mouthbreathers to go to the polls in other states, but they usually get to the polls anyway and vote against us, so i don't see a big difference from this.

i think they have squeezed all the juice out of this lemon already.

4. My worry isn't independents abandoning the Dems, but firing up the GOP base just before
the election.

6. i think there is a limit to how many times the GOP can cry wolf on one issue.
and they may have exceeded it with the marriage equality issue. sure, it will bring them donations, but so will abortion and all the other axes they grind on a daily basis.

notice how little we have read about the 8 (?) state amendments to ban marriage this election. it is harder to get people excited about an issue that the media are bored with.

12. I think the GOP base has a problem w/gays and not in a good way,
so they aren't likely to bring up anything.
I'm talking Foley, and I'm sorry gay people are involved, but that's the way it's been presented instead of the man being a pedophile, voyeur, whatever anyone wants to call him.

5. Well, Republicans aren't as energized as they were in '04
So what scares me about a ruling in favor of gay marriage is that it could produce a "Republicans coming home" effect and swing races in their directions in other states. As for NJ itself...Menendez and Kean have the same position on gay marriage, so the ruling won't affect NJ-Sen.

15. Wow. . .I think there are some times in history we could revisit
I bet Some people didn't want Rosa Parks staying in her seat on the bus cause of bad timing. . .

Would been better if Susan B would just sat down and knitted. . .and I am sure Woodrow Wilson didn't like those uppity women clamoring for the vote during wartime (WWI that is).

And go ahead and explain that you say this only because we are doing so well in the polls blah blah blah...but the fact is if you don't have the balls to stand up and fight for the rights of others or cheer those rights when then come around than you should be the one silenced.

Just cause the bush administration thinks its okay to hold back information (ie the report on the truth behind what will need to be done in Iraq) just so negative press won't influence the election, should be reason enough for every democrat in America to say to the media BRING IT ON! Try to spin Feingolds real esate deal as some shady, profiteering while Republicans are indicted for crimes, try to spin a pedophile as a democratic homosexual, but the truth is the lies are wearing thin.

19. I'm honestly very torn on this
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 03:57 AM by Charlie Brown
On the one hand, it will represent another milestone on the road to equal rights. On the other hand, an affirmitive decision will undoubtedly lead to more anti-gay laws in the red states, like adoption bans and limits on co-habitation rights. Sadly, that will ultimately have a much greater effect on gay couples than the court decision in NJ, and it's irrational to think that gay couples across the country can move to Massachusetts, California, and New Jersey.

New Jersey's gain will be the rest of the country's loss.

There should never be any hesitancy to affirm civil rights for ALL.

21. so what is your solution to the reactions in red states?
I have friends whom I'm sure will be affected by the fallout laws in Red State, USA.

"Civil rights for all" will be further hindered outside of NJ, but I'm sure you won't care.

25. No, I believe in civil rights for all
I just don't like seeing gay couples in Alabama, Tennessee, or Indiana treated like crap, and, believe me, adoption bans and similar laws will probably be hastened by this ruling.

How do you feel about equal rights for gay couples in "conservative" areas? Are there solutions to inequality here?

28. I believe in civil rights for all in ALL areas...
Which is why I'm confused by what you're saying. Consider the civil rights movement based on what you're saying. There never would have been equality for black Americans, for fear of creating problems for them in the south.

We can't limit where we extend rights based on where people are homophobic or see people as "less than" or undeserving of rights. By that reasoning, no one ever would have rights in this country. Because there's always going to be someone that feels that one group of people or another, isn't equal in their eyes.

26. "I really wish..."
What I really wish is that a day will come when people who label themselves as Dems are unwilling to throw their fellow citizens under the bus in order to get elected. I'm glad this is happening NOW.
