Bloomburg protecting children's health? |
|
Mayor Mike says he wants to raise the cigarette tax again. He wants to bring the cost of a pack of name brand cigarettes to $8.00 or more. He says he is doing it to protect the health of children. Yes there are health risks with the use of tobacco but there are other health risks in the 7-11 and corner grocery store as well.
If the mayor is trying to protect the health of children and not just trying to raise city revenue on the backs of smokers who can not have cheaper cigarettes delivered by Fed Ex or UPS then why is the punitive tax not used on other items? Maybe even items that children legally consume. Why is there not a $5.00 a box tax on cereal with a fructose sugar count higher than a certain amount? Why is there not a $5.00 tax per 2 liter bottle of Coke-Cola and a $1.00 tax per can? Why is he not pushing a $10.00 tax per dozen donuts?

1. You're making too much sense, something Bloomie would not |

understand.
I think I read someplace that cigs cannot be shipped to NY so I don't know if getting them delivered is an option.
Beating up on smokers is politically correct so that's why they are singled out.

And I think esmokes.com turns NYC names over to the city for collection of the tax.
