Any General Hospital fans? (Re: Lulu's abortion and the far right)
This summer, I watched the storyline of Luke and Laura's daughter Lulu who became pregnant because of faulty condoms (manufactured by ELQ). She is one of the first characters in daytime that I have seen actually get an abortion, after an agonizing and very realistic process.

My big fear was that because it IS daytime, that Lulu's character would be made to suffer something terrible as "atonement". Remember the All My Children storyline where Bianca came out as gay and then was brutally raped becoming pregnant as a result. (After being visited by supernatural creatures (yes, it IS daytime. :eyes:) she decided to carry the pregnancy to term, a decision I always thought was less realistic, though not impossible.)

So for those of you still watching GH, how is Lulu's character doing?

(And don't post if you are boycotting ABC--I respect your decision, but the question isn't about boycotting.)

Thanks,

Nikki

PS: Mods, please don't move this to the lounge. This is very much about politics and not gossip. Thanks.

1. Can do one better plot wise.

Erica Kane in All My Children was the first soap opera character to undergo an abortion in the early 70s. She THOUGHT she terminated her pregnancy through her marriage with Jeff Martin, her husband. BUT . . . in fact, a mad obstetrician, Dr. Greg Madden was obsessed with Erica and scientific innovation. He removed the zygote from Erica, preserved it, and implanted it in HIS wife, who gave birth to a son, Josh, and Erica never knew about it. Josh is now like 30-somethign and living in Pine Valley, Erica just found out that she has a living son, and she and Jeff are coping with this situation.

How do you think the Right to Life crowd likes this plot development?

5. Wow
Now there's a story line. I remember years ago on "Days of Our Lives" when I started watching it there was a couple and this one woman who was obsessed with the husband in that couple and she took their embryo and had it as their kid. I think that's what happened. It was a long time ago and I was just began watching.

15. Speaking of Y & R and abortion-
Remember that storyline about twenty years ago, when Ashley had an abortion because she thought Victor was going back to Niki? Talk about RW propaganda! First, they had a scene where she and Victor were arguing, in the pouring rain, right after her abortion when he'd found out about it, and he gave her a nice, big guilt trip and said he'd never forgive her for destroying their child. Then, she started having more and more problems coping until she just drove away one day, and ended up in a psychiatric hospital, nameless because she didn't even remember who she was, and totally wacko. They even had a "crying baby" soundtrack in the background during many of her scenes in the hospital. Guess they had to appease the RW TV police.

16. OMG! I remember that
Thanks for the reminder, I had totally forgotten about that. I know, a woman driven out of her mind because she had an abortion. Yep, the right wing tv police had to make sure she received her punishment for exercising her right over her own body.

17. If I'm remembering correctly, the show
got a lot of angry letters from people over that, a common question was asking what RW sponsor they had to kowtow to. I've often wondered that, myself.

18. This is exactly the kind of story line I am afraid of
These soaps are often watched by teenagers and college students. They can't help but be influential.

3. She is carrying a chip on her shoulder
She became very depressed afterwards, and is still having a major problem dealing with having the abortion. I don't like the way the story line has been handled at all, as they have this character, who is supposed to be what, 17 or 18 years old, wracked with guilt over what she has done. I'm not saying that she should have been laughing all the way out of the clinic, but I hate for Lulu to be seen constantly wallowing in her own guilt.

7. Oh sure
I know what you're saying. On "Days of Our Lives" the character Mimi had an abortion and she's in her early twenties so perhaps a different mind set or something but for a good little while they had Mimi mourn over the loss of the baby, losing her boyfriend and not being able to have children but she is now moving on and trying to get her life back together so they didn't linger on that storyline forever. I hate when shows do that.

19. That's what I was afraid of
I haven't been able to watch because my work hours are back to normal. Can you keep me posted as to what happens? They should not put this girl through hell for making a choice.

Last time I saw it Lulu was about five or six and Lucky was still protrayed by the very hot and talented Jonathan Jackson. *sigh* Anyways there was a character on "Days of Our Lives" named Mimi who got pregnant and she was going to tell her boyfriend that she was pregnant but kept hearing him say he wasn't ready for a family so she got scared that he would leave her and so she went and got an abortion and than she found out after she did it that he would have welcomed their child. I really enjoyed this type of storyline because we got to see how it effected the relationship and changed her life (the character now can't have children on her own). I remember the Bianca storyline pretty well. On "Passions" they recently did that with a black girl named Simone who was for years in love with this guy who loved her older sister (they're about two-three years apart I'd say) and she earlier this year came out as a lesbian. I loved that storyline too because we saw how it effected their family (mostly their father who at first was closed-minded). So there are a lot of good storylines out there. On edit with Mimi every time she heard her boyfriend say he wasn't ready for a family she would leave (she'd be spying) and than he'd turn around and say that he'd welcome it if it happened when she was gone. It was so frustrating.

14. LOL, I know exactly what you mean;
I was in high school during the whole Luke and Laura craze and, of course, I joined in on it with all the other girls in my school and even some family. Really hard to believe that it's been about 25 years now and they have grown children. Of course, the kids I used to babysit as babies and whose diapers I'd change are now parents themselves. SIGH.

8. Genie Francis is returning as Laura
She will appear for a short stint, I forget if it will be 2 weeks or 4. Some new miracle drug is supposed to bring Laura out of her catatonic state temporarily. I think her first appearance is this Friday. I'm hoping for some scenes between her and Lulu that could possibly heal Lulu and make her realize that she has nothing to feel guilty or less than anyone else about.

9. I always wondered what they would have done if the Murphy Brown
show would have had the star get an abortion instead of become a single mother. Quayle's head would have exploded on national television.

10. Lulu
was depressed at first but seems to be doing better. She had a college professor who got her motivated to stop feeling sorry for herself and stay in school. Maxi is guilt tripping Lulu whenever she can since she's pregnant by Lucky and Lulu is less than thrilled. Maxi is choosing to have the baby because she thinks she'll end up with Lucky as part of the package. Lulu's character is coming off as much more sympathetic and Maxi is coming off as a self righteous shrew.

12. at first, I wondered if Maxi was really pregnant.......
...although she does appear to be since the doctor has confirmed it. Still, I wouldn't put it past her to do something like that.

Yeah, she thinks she'll find a way to manipulate Lucky into being with her but I doubt that it will turn out that way.

I used to like Maxi but lately she has become a little witch....no offense intended toward witches.

My monies on she is faking it.

As far as Lulu, well it's getting kind of old about that chip on her shoulder.

11. I think she's doing pretty good..........
sure, she didn't really want to have an abortion but neither did she want to go through with having the baby and have the child go through life without her.......much like she herself grew up.

It seems strange how everyone seems to be getting pregnant on that show now......but I guess that's what happens when everyone uses defective condoms.

And I watch the soaps on soapnet so technically I don't watch them on ABC
