Making sure that Bush doesn't happen again
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 01:00 PM by ck4829
Some people have expressed that the Electoral College should be dismantled, this is unlikely to happen.

But maybe we can try something else, how about the requirement of a double majority to elect the President?

In this, it will be required that to be elected President, one must get a two thirds vote from the Electoral College AND a majority of the popular vote as well.

If we had this back in 2000, the problems could have been worked out and we'd be having Gore as President instead of the Dunce in Chief.

(Double majorities are used in the US to vote on tax levies and bonds to "prevent a small group from passing spending measures which affect the entire population in order to support their pet causes", so if we want more power against the 'christian' and Far Right, then we should consider this.)

3. I would prefer paper ballots
with automatic statewide recounts if the margin of "victory" is less than 3%.

That would have given Gore the presidency, too.

If we ever get rid of the EC, it'll have to be done in stages. First stage is proportional representation. Once that is enacted, the whole thing becomes irrelevant.

6. A Constitutional Amendment
prohibiting the heirs, siblings, spouses, cousins, etc. of any former President of the United States from running for the office of the President or Vice President for at least 20 years after the last day of the last term of that former President.

An Amendment such as described would prevent "elected" monarchies from occurring; and would prevent the beneficial accumulation of power for Presidential heirs as gained through the parent's political and financial network.

This is one good step in the direction of preventing another George W. Bush.
