Imagine waking up the day after the elections... |
|
Dems have fought hard, done all the right things these last few weeks, and in a tremendous electoral victory taken back both Houses of Congress.
Except Joe Lieberman is still the Senator from Connecticut.
Yes, this could happen. But Joe is a Dem right, he'll continue to caucus with the Dems, so it won't be that bad?
Yup, it is as bad as it gets. He could defect for one thing. He's grown increasingly bitter about losing to Lamont in the primary and losing the support of many of his Democratic colleagues.
But Joe sits on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Armed Services, Environment/Public Works, and Small Business Committees. In fact, he is the ranking member on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee.
Do you really want Joe Lieberman to be the chair of the committee that is supposed to not only protect us, but keep the Bush administration honest in their Homeland Security dealings?
I sure the hell don't, and I think it would be a travesty if he was.
I believe that if Dems take control of both houses, yet we are still stuck with Joementum, well, it pretty much nullifies all the hard work everybody has been doing for the last few years.
He is that out of touch and that bad.
So here's hoping Ned Lamont retires Joe to the lobbyist profession for good.
I would hardly be saddened by it.

1. The chairman is not the be-all and end-all of the committee. |
|
And this scaremongering about Joementum is getting rather tiresome.
I believe that if Dems take control of both houses, yet we are still stuck with Joementum, well, it pretty much nullifies all the hard work everybody has been doing for the last few years.
I'm really, really glad that the Democrats who are running for office and winning in historically Republican strongholds don't agree with you one bit.

6. yeah but what the hell do they have to do with Lieberman? |
|
sure the chairman is not the be all and end all, but he can do tons of damage. You expect Joe to be serious about the Katrina aftermath debacle? It's his job to be. You expect him to vote with Dems to hold Bush accountable for something on that committee? Not going to happen.

9. I understand where you're coming from. |

And the idea of having Lieberman anywhere in the vicinity national security decisions is icky in the extreme. But I hardly think that his presence, odious as it may be, negates all of the positives of being the majority party in the Senate.

maybe I came off a little too contentious in saying it will negate everything. If he wins he'll be in a position where he can still be a Bush enabler, and given how frustrating he's been over the last few years, is cause for concern.

In all likelihood we will be stuck dealing with him. Though I doubt, given current sentiment about the war, that his obections will be relevant for much longer. It remains to be seen what level of difficulty he will present. It just irks me that a lot of people are spreading nonsense about him caucusing with the Republicans as a sort of scare tactic to further Lamont's campaign. Lieberman will be a problem. I'm still not convinced that he doesn't have aspirations for something beyond the senate. But really, he's a manageable problem. We'll give him more power than the Republicans ever would, and a pound of political flesh will be exacted from him when the time comes, if it comes.

2. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that if Lieberman stays and gets to keep his |

seniority etc, then that gives Lautenberg a reason to get back the seniority he lost when he retired and trump Joe for the chairmanship of Homeland Security.

I always liked the guy, so I don't despise him. He's just gotten increasingly selfish and has a dangerous philosophy toward policy. But yeah, I would say other races are more important.

8. I Sent Lamont Money... Wish I Could Do More! |
|
Old "prune face" has shown his REAL colors of late! It's too sad, but I feel he may just become a complete turn coat in the end too!
I realize CT has many Independents, but so many of them are Anti-War... so WHY are they supporting him? I suppose it's the "behind the scenes" Dems, but can't prove it.
