Outright Racism-TN Woman Threatened For Harold Ford Bumper Sticker

TN-Sen: Heartbreaking
by R o o k
Wed Oct 25, 2006 at 08:27:14 AM PDT

A friend of my mother owns a small shop on the main street of her town in Middle Tennessee. Her car has a Harold Ford, Jr., bumper sticker on it. The other day, a young man came into the shop and asked her if the bumper sticker was hers. She said yes.

The young man said, "You better watch out that you don't get your store burned down, because we don't vote for n*****s around here."

I did ask her permission before retelling this story, and she requested that I not give any more specifics than "Middle Tennessee" because she takes the threat very seriously.

I find this story heartbreaking.

This is the outright racism that African-Americans have to deal with in Tennessee and elsewhere throughout the nation (not just the South). Much more common is the subtle racism of distrust that gives African-Americans a disadvantage in the job market, educational opportunities, the criminal justice system, etc.

1. It's not the racism so much
It's the right wing's willingness to resort to threats, violence and murder to back up their wacko political views.

2. .
And what is almost as worse, Corker and the Repubs feed this racism with their stupid ads. They know exactly what they do and they don't care about the racism they cause. Irresponsible.

3. Racism ? maybe
Envy ?

Of course !

You have to admit, Harold does look like a male model.

I am confident there are plenty of secure MEN in Tennesse that dont feel
threatened by Harold's appeal.

'nuff said.

4. Imagine how this would be unfolding...
...if someone had caught the incident on video.

5. Too bad that little store didn't have a security camera.
Isn't making "terroristic threats" a crime? Of course in those little backwoods places justice is only for the "right people" and someone supporting Ford likely doesn't fall into that category.

6. It's incredible how, in some parts of the South, it's like the Civil Rights movement...
...never happened. Rural Florida is no different.

10. It's incredible how, in some parts of the entire frigging country,
it's as if the Civil Rights movement never happened.

Geesch people. You're blind if you think this behavior is limited to one region of the country.

11. I didn't say it wasn't happening elsewhere, my retentive friend.
But thanks for stating the obvious and being obnoxious about it.

7. This is sad
They have a well-educated, articulate, politically experienced candidate and they are worried about his skin color? They should be thankful to have him on the ballot.

8. What year is this? 1954?
Its a sad testament to the amount of damage that the neocons have done to civil rights in this once great nation.

repeatedly lynched by a baying hate-filled mob, revived and lynched again and again and again. Maybe it's what's happening to their forbears in Hell right now.

"Vengeance is mine", saith the Lord. "I will repay!" It would be good if the FBI staked out the lady's shop, caught the scum red-handed and they were sent down for a very long time.

13. I am from Middle Tennessee and live there...I honestly can't imagine where it
happened...I'd really like to know the town. I live in Lawrence County, between Florence, Alabama and Lawrenceburg, Tennessee...

I'd bet it was Wayne County if I had to guess...
