We are the hiders of the planet....
We hide our debt, we hide our over spending, we hide our sick children and we hide the benefits they should have to make them better. Our politicians even try to hide their political affiliation during elections.
Our media. It hides our poor cities, the slums, the bums, and the crimes that seep out beneathe our collective radar. We have an Americana theme of poverty, homelessness, but our media hides our failure to house even our own population. Instead the media reports our panic about housing prices, falling prices, rising prices, buyers market, sellers market...market...market...market...
Our elected leaders hide their mistakes, their immorality, their money, their lobbyist buddies, their trips, pensions, laws, lack of laws, spouses, in-laws, children,.....vacations from reality? Our elected leaders hide us, their citizens. We are listed on a website, in a drawer, on a campaign sign, on a letterhead...but we are not real to them anymore....so they hide us, our humanity. And we let them over and over again.
We Americans hide our motives for change, for staying the course, for negotiating, for anything or anyone who can challenge us to.....cooperate, collaborate, care.....We hide our fears....
We hide our dead. We hide our war dead. We hide the living dead. You know who I mean. Our disabled soldiers, children, senior citizens. Anyone who reminds us of what the stuff of life is really made of...life...and death....we hide.
We hide our failures, the juveniles we made war on in our society before they made war on us. We hide the child trafficking that is right under our noses. We hide our abused children in plain sight. We hide our impoverished mothers and our underemployed men. We hide our new found child labor, fast food, cheap retail, and even cheaper recreation. We hide the theft our corporations placate us with daily---cheap imported goods. We hide our immigrants, legal or otherwise.
We hide our broken judicial system and our sorry prison system. We hide the particulars of the laws that are made in our name and the laws that are broken in our name. We hide justice. What happens to a country when we grant the status title of "system" to an entity that truly has no "process"?
Before you choose to be one more hidden human being, become visible on election day. Stand up, be seen, go vote. Someone, somewhere may hide your vote but they can't hide you....unless you let them.
