SENATOR JEFFORDS STATEMENT ON ALITO - NO! "A lifetime is too long"
1/26 - Sen. Jeffords' Statement on Judge Alito
Statement of Sen. Jim Jeffords, I-Vt.

On Nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to US Supreme Court

"After much consideration, I will not support the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to fill Justice O'Connor's seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. While Judge Alito is clearly qualified and capable of serving on the high court, I believe our country would be ill-served by his judicial philosophy at this critical point in time. This philosophy would grant too much authority to one branch of government at the expense of the others. There are limits on the power of the Presidency, and Judge Alito, in my view, has not demonstrated the needed respect for those limits. While others will disagree with my assessment of Judge Alito, this will be a lifetime appointment and a lifetime is too long to be wrong."

5. Great! Heww, we need to filibuster...
if, as the Dems and this independent are saying, "this will be a lifetime appointment and a lifetime is too long to be wrong." That this will tip the court in the wrong direction for years to come, is justification enough to do WHATEVER it takes to keep Alito of the court. Hope just ONE of the Dems gets a "spine" and filibusters, thus putting all of his/her colleagues on the record "for real" on this nomination. By not filibustering, one can vote "no" in the knowledge he's gonna get confirmed anyway---save face, while at the same time secretly hoping he gets confirmed.

We won't find out what any really thinks unless it is filibustered!

7. It's not the Extreme Court.
The Supreme Court is not a place for extremes. Not unless you want America to mimic the other failures of the world's societies.

8. Why are the courts lifetime anyway. To prevent constant political
changing? Or is it some other reasons?

20. it's to protect the Court from the political forces in America
A justice is supposed to do what is right without regard for the political consequences. If he or she is appointed for life, then controversial but right decisions like Lawrenece v. Texas and Roe v. Wade can be made.

The government was essentially designed so that it was not completely controlled by anyone, even the people.

21. My guess is that he means as a 'jurist', Alito is certainly qualified..
he KNOWS the law, and has the necessary experience. It is, however, the way he has chosen to apply the law; his own personal philosophy, evident in his past rulings and opinions, which are "wrong" to Sen. Jeffords.
