Wow! Did anyone else catch the Dixie Chicks on Oprah?!?!
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 05:35 PM by scarletwoman
It was truly amazing! Oprah plugged their new movie, "Shut Up and Sing" like mad, and actually asked thoughtful, trenchant questions.

All three of those women make me SOOOO proud! Their grace, wisdom, integrity and groundedness just emanates from them like radiant light. It was such a pleasure to see them on TV -- I had no idea they were going to be on Oprah today, I just happened to turn it on for background noise while I got online.

Anyway, I hope some other DUers will have a chance to see this program -- I know Oprah is broadcast at different times in different areas. The show opens with Madonna, "setting the record straight" about her adoption of the boy in Malawi. I didn't much pay attention; not being a Madonna fan, and not finding it a particularily relevant issue.

But once I realized the Dixie Chicks were up next I sat up and paid attention. It's a terrific interview. Natalie Mains is incandescent with outrage, it's a beautiful sight! She spoke carefully but with total honesty. She said her only regret about the infamous line spoken at that long ago London concert was that if she had known it was going to stir things up so much, she would liked to have said something "more intelligent" to express her anti-Iraq war sentiment.

All three of them had fascinating things to say about dealing with the vitriol and death threats, and what it was like to see their lives changed so suddenly and profoundly. And Oprah played several clips from "Shut Up and Sing".

Anyway, as someone who has no cable TV, and mainly just watches local/network/PBS news shows, I would rate this Oprah show a "must-see".

8. Welcome to DU haymark
I can't wait either. I learned "Not Ready To Make Nice" on my acoustic guitar recently. Them is some mighty powerful lyrics. My favorite part is:

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don't mind sayin'
It's a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Sayin' that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

2. They were very good
and Oprah was awesome at staying OFF the subject of the Iraq war and any discussion of why you would ever be critical of Bush.

3. Crap. I turned on the TV earlier when someone started a thread
about the Chicks being on Oprah and when I saw Madonna I turned it off again.

5. Their last album had well over 2 million in sales. They've crossed over...

Which is very hard to do in Country music...The idiot republicans are to thank for that, the Republicans big mouth's helped the Dixie Chicks crossover into "Pop" Rock and AOR.

9. Album of the Year...
Grammy picks for 2006: Modern Times - Bob Dylan; Taking the Long Way - Dixie Chicks, Stadium Arcadium - Red Hot Chili Peppers; The Seeger Sessions - Bruce Springsteen; St. Elsewhere - Gnarls Barkley....Please no Justin Timberlake...overhyped/overexposed, mediocre pop fluff is not worthy to be amongst the finalists...what are your picks?

10. Wasn't that great?!
Man, I'd love to hang out with Natalie some time. She's such a pistol. I wasn't a Chicks fan before but I am now. That gal has the voice of an angel.

I checked out Oprah's message board after the show and the bushbots are going nuts! :puke:
Lots of Pro-DCX comments, too, though.

Here's a link if anyone is interested. http://boards.oprah.com/WebX?14@221.Ahflc8ZK04F.5@.f12957a!skip=587&view=C

20. Yeesh, what a bunch of whining, ignorant,
clueless Bushbots on there, hitting all the right "talking points." I especially love the ones who complain that celebrities should just shut up and do their thing without opening their mouths about politics, yet these are the same people who have no problem with REPUB celebrities. Then there are the clueless idiots spouting the "love it or leave it" meme, with obviously no fucking clue as to what the constitution and this country is really all about.

Of course, it was very nice to see the retired marine stick up for the Chicks, saying he fought so that ALL voices and opinions had the right to be heard. Can't wait to see how he's gonna be trashed by the ignorant Bushbot rednecks.

21. Scarey, isn't it?

I just discovered that board last week when I went there to see what people were saying about O'Reilly's upcoming appearance. Some of those people scare the living shit out of me. How are they even able to walk upright? I liked the lady who said she had the "up most respect" for Bush and another one who said that she felt "dooped" by Oprah. LMFAO!

There are a lot of good comments there, too. Probably a lot more than we would have seen even just a year ago. I hadn't watched Oprah in ages until she did the Frank Rich show a few weeks ago. I hope she keeps having these types of shows.

And the VH1 Storytellers show they taped last month (that I was fortunate enough to attend here in LA) airs on Saturday night. Do NOT miss it!!

16. Yes, well, YOU may not watch Oprah, but millions of people do.
Whether we like it or not, her show reaches a hell of a lot of people -- so I hope you'll understand my excitement over the fact that the Dixie Chicks were given this powerful public platform and did so well with it.
