The War In Iraq Gets Personal

LEAVENWORTH, Kan., Oct. 25, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(CBS) Down a dirt road in rural Kansas, when President Bush spoke today of the number of American service members killed in Iraq, each of those numbers had a name, CBS News national correspondent Byron Pitts reports.

"My son died in a country that I have no idea, really, why we're even there," Diana Unger says.

Her son, Cpl. David Unger of Leavenworth, Kan., was married to his high school sweetheart and was the father of two kids — including a baby just 20 months old. He had a mom, a stepdad, two brothers and a l3-year-old sister who adored him.

"It's different for every person to handle," says Jeremy Unger, David's brother, with tears on his face. "He was my older brother. I looked up to him a lot. It's just hard."

And it was also hard, they said, listening to President Bush this morning.

When the president said he understood how tough the Iraq battle was, some of Unger's family had a physical reaction.

"Unless he puts his daughters over there and he has that real fear everyday of not wanting to turn on the television, that fear that gets into your heart and your head, he can't fathom what that means," Diana says.

(snip)

At this hour, the body of U.S. Army Cpl David Unger is arriving at the Kansas City Airport. He'll be buried Friday, four days before his 22nd birthday.

1. My son is in the Marines.
I think I would literally explode. I'm not sure I could handle it if he was sent over there, let alone injured or killed. I don't know how I would survive the anger and hatred that I already feel. We're very lucky that he has been stationed in Japan and will likely finish out his enlistment there, though we know that they are calling back inactive reserves right and left. I just hope that the Democrats take power and find a way to bring this nightmare to an end. I truly feel for this family and every family that has lost a loved one for no good reason.

9. My daughter is in Iraq... a medic with the 101st...
... Every day is a painful waiting game. Knowing that she is busy... probably over-worked as the death and wounded toll rises with each passing day, I still wait... for an e-mail, or a phone call... some indication that she is ok... and dreading the one that I pray does not come.

I am not, and selfishly hope that I never am, able to feel what parents of a killed or injured soldier feels...

But I live in fear... I watch the news, hoping for some good to come from something, but it never does.

She is due home before Thanksgiving...

I will see her soon.

11. Please let us know when she gets home.
I guess you do what you have to do -- I'm just not sure I could live through what you're living through. I'm proud of what your daughter is doing -- she's performing an invaluable service to her fellow servicemen and women. I wish all of you the best!

17. I know of everything you speak
My husband came home in June. That painful waiting and living in fear is the worst part. Please keep us updated and here's a hug in the meantime

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, and hoping you have a terrific Thanksgiving!

7. President Bush I only hope the Christian Hell is real
because for what you've done, you have a place reserved in the lake of molten fire.

Nobody but the dead know whether all these things people talk about are worth dying for or not. And the dead can't talk. So the words about noble deaths and sacred blood and honor and such are all put into dead lips by grave robbers and fakes who have no right to speak for the dead. Johnny Got His Gun.

10. Oh--another mother who is "being exploited" by "the democrats"
... according to Junkie Rush Limbaugh, who referred to Cindy Sheehan that way the other day (in between bouts of making fun of Michael J. Fox's illness.)

Or, maybe, just another mother who is actually experiencing the republicans' policies--instead of just reading about them in the newspapers and in the faxes from Karl Rove.

15. Our local paper had a sad story about this kid
Apparently some of his family is from SE Texas, and he and his wife and child were going to swing through Beaumont this holiday so that their 18 month old could meet his great-grandmother for the first time. Very sad. :(

http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17373053&BRD=2287&PAG=461&dept_id=512588&rfi=15

This December, Cpl. David Unger was planning his first visit to Beaumont to meet his stepfather's grandmother and introduce her to her great-great-stepgrandchild.

On Oct. 17, Unger, 21, was killed in Iraq when his Humvee drove over an improvised explosive device. Unger died along with five other men, including an Iraqi interpreter, who were inside the vehicle, his family said.

Unger was stationed at Fort Hood and was scheduled to be home for Christmas. He was to be discharged in early 2007, said his mother, Diana Pitts.

"It would have been the first time in three years that he would have been home for Christmas," said Unger's stepfather, Scott Pitts.

Cpl. Unger's story also appeared the same time that we lost another local soldier, a 23 year old on his THIRD tour. It's been a sad week for too many families.

If you click on the link, be sure to read the commends appended at the bottom. People are getting utterly FED UP with this bullshit! They see through the incompetence and have simply had enough.
