NJ Ruling Is A Mixed Bag: Will Have No Effect On The Election
The Supreme Court in New Jersey officially found no inherent right to "marriage" for same sex couples in the state.

That should delight bigots and Republicans (where there is a difference between the two).

The Supreme Court also found that the civil rights pursuant to marriage must not be denied based on the sexual orientation or the gender of the participants in a relationship.

Thus, they sanctioned civil unions. Something that poll after poll after poll shows that 70% or more of Americans support. Including head religious mullah George W. Bush.

The ruling is not a full victory for gays and it is not a full victory for fundamentalist bigots.

It breaks no new ground whatsoever legally, it is a one or two day news story and, try as they might to re-fan the homophobic flames of 2004, the Republicans are going to have to look elsewhere to do it.

1. agreed.
Unless the MSM is distorting the facts of the decision horribly, I agree 100%.

3. Agreed. NJ has come a very long way. I'm very proud of my
state. If Menendez loses it will be because of all the dirt Kean is throwing. His ads are hideous. This ruling will have nothing to do with the election.

4. I don't care if it does have an effect
My rights are not up (or shouldn't be at least) for popular consideration.
If the majority of people vote against their interests in order to deny me my rights than fuck them.
If the Democrats in NJ feel the need to run away from this than fuck them to.

Right Ruggerson?

5. It will not have an effect one way or another, but I do care
because I would like the Democrats to take back the Senate and prevent another anti- gay, anti-woman, anti-dispossessed, religious rightwing activist asshole from being confirmed to the Supreme Court.

Purely strategically, I would rather win the war than just one battle.
