Let's start a religion and call it sasema... |
|
...wherein the institution of same sex marriage is revered. Anyone who either wishes to be a partner in a same sex marriage or who supports same sex marriage can join. One rule: all unions between consenting adults are holy. Specifically, marriage would not be defined as a union only between a man and a woman or even as a union only between two people.
If the fundies insist on inserting religion into civil matters, let's turn religion on its head.

8. Yes, because it neutralizes their argument, in a way. |

In Christianity, marriage is a sacrament, right? So, it's a sacrament in sasema, as well. And it's not good to mess with anything that a given religion considers holy. They don't have to like it or agree with it but they have to respect it--in theory, anyway. Regardless, it sort of exposes the arbitrary nature of their "rules."

3. Well, I say a marriage is a union between two people... |
|
No sexual act between consenting adults is immoral provided it does not break a promise made to another. If a couple wants to engage in swinging, great. If both parties value sexual fidelity, that is their decision.

4. Although, to be fair, many denominations already feel that way. |
|
Liberal Christian Churches, Unitarians, lots of Reform Judaism congregations, etc. I've been to gay and lesbian weddings in churches, even though the state don't recognize 'em.
I'm not a member of any organized religion (unless you're one of those asshats who tries to insist atheism is a "religion") but I do think it's fair to point that fact out. If you want a faith that accepts and reveres same sex unions between consenting adults, you don't need to start a new one- they do exist.
