Schools Reverse on Gunman Defense Tactic

BURLESON, Texas -- A suburban Fort Worth school district that has been teaching
students to attack a gunman if he invades a classroom said Wednesday that it has
halted the program.

The district will continue to train students in how to respond to life-threatening
situations but no longer will show them how to take down an attacker, spokesman
Richard Crummel said.

Robin Browne, an instructor for Response Options, the security company that provided
the training, had recommended that students and teachers "react immediately to the
sight of a gun by picking up anything and everything and throwing it at the head and
body of the attacker and making as much noise as possible. Go toward him as fast as
we can and bring them down."

The district sent letters to parents Friday expressing regret for the training and
saying the district "does not, nor will we support teaching our students to attack
an intruder."

1. I am a teacher and I think attacking an attacker
can be a good idea. I'm sick of kids, especially girls, becoming helpless with a killer and ending up dead.

2. I think so too
I would rather have my child fight or flee than just stand there, waiting to be shot like a sitting duck.

3. I tell my first graders (because no one else will)
to scream and run from anyone who threatens them or offers them anything. I also say to them to tell a threatening kidnapper "You kill me right here where people are watching." because if they get in a car, the person will kill them where nobody can see. It is brutal but they need to know the truth.
