Freepery coworker thought water-boarding was something like wind-surfing
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 10:54 PM by nam78_two
I am series...

He was under the impression that its an "aggessive interrogation technique" where you make people physically tired by either simulating wind-surfing or possibly by actually wind-surfing....He even said there are nice beaches near Gitmo.

I didn't know what it was when I first heard it but I was sure it wasn't a day at the beach.

Very bright when it comes to science-but proud of the fact that he doesn't follow the news or politics. He is conservative because his family is very conservative.

He is a fundie who is constantly trying to reconcile his Christian beliefs with science.

He wrote an algorithm that "proves God exists"...whatever that means -I feel bad for him mostly.

He is a proof of how upbringing can skew even fairly intelligent people -this kid has great grades and he is doing a PhD in Physics at a highly ranked U. But he won't question any of the beliefs he was raised with :eyes:...
How does that happen?

read a pinko site like DU, why would he even have a conversation with you?

In a department full of men ;) to be honest.

He hates my politics and keeps trying to have discussions about politics & "convert" me. And the thing is I hate discussing this stuff with people who are *completely* ignorant and just have opinions.
But, I will send him the links-I did actually explain what water-boarding was briefly.

But met with the usual "they did much worse to our soldiers" blah blah...No need for specifics of course when you are just making shit up :eyes:

O.K. that's it, we have to have laws that require a certain intelligence level for one to be qualified to vote. The well being and future of our country depends on it. That is if we ever get ourselves out of the hole these people have buried us in.

8. He's also wrong about the GTMO beaches.
I was stationed there, and the surf sucks and the sharks and barracuda aren't much fun. The only halfway decent beach is reserved for the officers.

nice (Cable, Pebble, Windmill etc.) but none of them are places that prisoners there could ever go to.

No beaches were off limits to enlisted when I was there. Back when we had a real president.

(disclosure: I was there before it ever became a prison gulag)

15. I was there in the seventies.
Sure, an enlisted person might get invited, but, generally, there was definitely an Officers' Country.
And you could hang out at the beaches and feed peanut butter to the iguanas, but the beaches were pebble with little sand, and windsurfing was either unknown at the time or very new and obscure. I saw people try to surf, and it was kinda pathetic.

GTMO even has fast food joints, now. I enjoyed the Q-hut restaurants the Cuban and Jamaican nationals who worked on the base had going in their housing areas. And night fishing for red snapper.

16. This is a great example of what frustrates me the most....
they don't care enough to find out about an issue themselves and just make up a scenario that fits the "my president would never do anything that those unChristian Dems would do" mindframe. Why?!?!

Security is not the only issue - I see it with all of the issues. "Partial-birth abortion" is another one. It is NOTHING at all like what they firmly believe and yet they've never, obviously, even tried to find out a MEDICAL opinion on it.

23. Maybe what's needed to wake some folks up is a little "Show and Tell".
Let's get CNN, MSNBC, et. al., to put on a little on-air video of what "Waterboarding" is; bring in a big tank, fill it, get a board set up and go at'er.

Maybe have one of the many blond bimbo newsreaders and vapid personality that inhabit those airwaves put on a swimsuit (tasteful one piece, please) and volunteer to be interrogated.

I'd love to hear what Rita Crosby would have to say after a couple of demos. Bet she'd spill the beans on John Gibson right quick.
