1. My home town Tigers!!!
My favorite Tiger team was the 1961 team. They didn't win that year, but they were awfully fun to watch. 1968 was a cool year, too, when they *did* win it all--against the St Louis Cardinals no less.

Hope my Tiges win again this year.

5. I'm a lifelong Cardinal fan -
being from the St. Louis metro area - and I must say I am thoroughly disgusted and ashamed. I understand the anti-stem cell research ad was to be shown prior to the game this evening - which was rained out. Does anyone know if it was aired - or will it be rescheduled just like the game? That is some pretty pricey advertising time.

6. This is so pathetic
McCaskill puts on a person that actually has parkinson's and is making an emotional appeal and the best that they can come up with is some out of the blue baseball player and kurt warner? Do thy really think that voters in Missouri will really think, "Oh Kurt Warner is against stem cell research so Michael J Fox can suffer for the rest of his life." Give me a damn break. If Barry Bonds came and told me that the Iraq war was right that wouldn't change my opinion at all.

8. Mixing sports and politics is stupid
I'm pretty sure there are probably Tigers players who are conservative Republicans, too. Am I disappointed that Jeff Suppan is a Repuke? You bet. Very much so. But that has what to do with baseball or the Cardinals as a team?

Yeah, I remember in 2004 how everyone here was trying to conflate the Red Sox into the "Democratic team" and the Cardinals into the "Republican team"... and then Curt Schilling came out and stumped for Bush. And that should illustrate the idiocy of trying to make sports into a political allegory.

Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 01:56 PM by Neecy
To even the score, here's a quote from Tigers closer Todd Jones when he was pitching for the Rockies (and the team had to issue an apology for his remarks):

Colorado Rockies pitcher Todd Jones, a 6-foot, 3-inch pitcher from Marietta, Ga., said an openly gay player would create a hostile locker-room environment, and that opposing pitchers would likely throw intentionally at his head.

"I wouldn't want a gay guy being around me," Jones said. "It's got nothing to do with me being scared. That's the problem: All these people say he's got all these rights. Yeah, he's got rights or whatever, but he shouldn't walk around proud. It's like he's rubbing it in our face. 'See me, hear me roar.' We're not trying to be close-minded, but then again, why be confrontational when you don't really have to be?"

10. yes it is stupid -
but this will become a reflection of the Cardinal team as a whole and perhaps the city of St. Louis during a very high profile time. It's a definite disruption to sports in general and possibly within the team. I have no idea when Suppan filmed this ad or if he was aware it was to be aired prior to a world series game. I agree the mix is stupid as hell - but it's already out there big time.

13. no - absolutely not
I hate what he said - it is disgusting. But from what I have read elsewhere his statement is already being received as a generic slam to the Cardinals. That is my whole point. His narrow-minded stance should not represent any team or city as a whole. However; I worry that is what will happen.

14. Well, it's what's happening on DU unfortunately
Because for some reason unknown to me people want to turn this into Suppan = Cardinals = Republicans - I've seen at least 5 threads on this on DU tonight already. The next thing they'll say is Cardinals fans must be freepers, too - first the "get a brain morans" guy had a Cardinals shirt, and now Suppan is a fundie - well, obviously all Cardinals fans are freepers, then!

Suppan was INCREDIBLY stupid to open his mouth about politics in the middle of the World Series his team is playing - he's GOT to know that there are plenty of Democratic Cardinals fans. I'm very pissed at him. But it also disappoints me to see people, for reasons unknown to me, spinning this as "the Cardinals are freepers!" Because obviously, if one member of a group is a freeper, they all are. :eyes:

Argh, sorry for the rant. I think I should just go to bed.

It was also on his hand for several games as far back as July. Who accidently gets their hands dirty in that manner that many times?

Though I would also suspect roids with Rogers as he went from a near dispassionate player to a nutso who attacked a camera man and his Clemens act this year.

Keep believing a 40+ picther suddenly picked up 3 miles on his fastball and throw his off speed pitches with a break not seen since he was in his prime 10 years ago. Maybe Pudge told him where to get the good stuff.

The gambler got caught with extra aces and will join Mike Scott on the list of basebal cheater who ain't so lovable (your Gaylord Perry, Whitey Ford etc who played in a era where cheating was a wink and a nod)

43. Anheuser-Busch doesn't own the Cardinals any more
The team was sold in 1995 to a group of investors.

http://tinyurl.com/y6tqgz

Anheuser-Busch announced today that it has agreed to sell the St. Louis Cardinals for $150 million to a group of investors who say they will keep the team in the city. The deal still must be approved by Major League Baseball, and the new owners, led by the St. Louis lawyer Fred Hanser, expect to close the deal Feb. 15.

The deal includes Busch Stadium and its parking garages. The stadium will keep the name, officials said.

In addition to Hanser, the group includes Andrew Baur, president of Southwest Bank in St. Louis, and William DeWitt Jr., a Cincinnati businessman who has owned interests in the Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers and Cincinnati Reds. DeWitt's father once owned the St. Louis Browns and later the Reds.

Anheuser-Busch, the world's largest brewer, announced in October it wanted to sell the team, which it has owned since 1953, to focus more on its core businesses

This doesn't impact my decision.

But suppan is scheduled to pitch Game 4. So, I will be certainly hoping he gets his balls handed to him, so the Tigers can force a return to Detroit this weekend.

Unfortunately, if you're a Cardinals fan, it more or less forces you to choose between rooting for this guy who is on the mound for your team later today, or else hope he gets his clocked cleaned, and pays some price for being a STUPID REDNECK MORON, in league with the bible thumping kurt warner.

Oh please! I'm not about to root against my home team because one pitcher, raised in Oklahoma, who's been in St. Louis for a whole 2 years, disagrees with my political/religious views. He's a big-time Catholic, what do you expect? At least he walks the talk, and I have to respect him for that, no matter how much I disagree.

What is wrong with stem cell research? Who does it hurt? How many cures for diseases have been found from stem cell research?

For some reason I think he might be against "embryonic" stem cell research, because I don't think "all" stem cell research is under attack. Is it? What am I missing?

Either way it doesn't matter. To heck with the feds not funding it...we can still do it privately...right?

The cross-state cellar dwellers also have a spokesman for the 16th century in this ad - the oft injured, fragile as a daisy Mike Sweeney.

Here are some words of wisdom from the man who wants to ensure that critically ill Americans die before their time:

One challenge that is always apparent is spiritual warfare. I know that when I’m on the road, and even when I’m playing in games, Satan’s at work. He wants me to slip; he wants me to do something that would put me on the front page of the newspaper for messing up. “This so-called Christian man, look what he’s done.”

In these times, I just try to emulate Christ in Matthew chapter 4. Whether it be in a situation like, “Mike, go out to the bar with the guys. It’s not a big deal.” Or, “These last 12 years in Kansas City have been a fluke. You’re really a terrible ballplayer, and you’re going to fall on your face.” I know Satan is trying to pierce my heart with things like that. That’s his ammunition. What I try to do is replace lies with truth. When I get invited to the bars I decline, because as a man of God my wife is more important than my friends and my team. I made a covenant relationship with my wife before God; I didn’t make a covenant relationship with my teammates. And when Satan tries to attack my game I say, “You know what? God has given me the Holy Spirit,” because Acts 1:8 says that you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.

I really don't care if this is what he believes, but when he pushes to legislate his beliefs that's when he crosses the line.

War criminal throws out first pitch to christen Stadium.

I'm still pullin' for the Birds, it's in the blood. Grew up on the stuff.

Pretty sad I'd say since I can't stand LaRussa and the owner is buddies with Herr Bushler.

I can't believe you as a Cards fan can look at that and still root for your team. Here's to brainwashing at an early age! :toast: Good Job Dad.

55. Totally
What's wrong with me? Go team beat gladiators.

But you gotta understand I memorized all the stats for the Cards through the 70's back when they were mediocre and I had dreams. It's a sickness. Now back to the game....

56. Ack! They just showed the ad,
Cardinals score two runs. They're creaping up on the Tigers, that's how they play ball.

When Casey hit that homerun I think I heard him shout "This is for Stem Cell Research!" when he touched homeplate.

Go Cards!
