Every DUer should be using FIREFOX 2.
It has a built-in spell checker that underlines errors as you type. Schweeet.

And a cool plug-in that puts all the iTunes controls in the status bar. Double schweeeet.

When I upgraded I got a warning dialog that said BBEdit was out of date and couldn't be imported...so it just got ditched, I guess.

36. Impatiently waiting for Colorful Tabs compatability
really liked that add-on, and miss it. :(

Don't know if it's related to that particular add-on or not - Is there something that can be added/adjusted/used to allow more than 10 tabs to be open without having to use an arrow to scroll forward or back to access pages?

That said, it does seem to load much faster.

7. Would you mind translating that into English for the non-computerphiles
of the group? Not sure what Firefox is, why it is good, and how my life will be greatly improved with this addition to my life. I've seen this mentioned before but do not have a clue what Firefox actually is. I'm going with the idea that if you know enough about Firefox and computers to say this is good than you probably already have it. I'm in the group that are scratching their heads and going, "Huh?"

9. It is an internet browser...
you know, it views web sites. It is better because:

1. It loads web site faster than internet explorer
2. It has a built-in spell checker; if you post on other forums this will be helpful.
3. There are very few security flaws, meaning that your information is much safer in Firefox 2. And when a security flaw is discovered, it is usually fixed quicker than Internet Explorer.
4. It is more customizable, you can use themes in the browser to change the way it looks.

Here is the Mozilla Firefox website:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Go there to find out more.

11. It is a web browser
Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which I assume you're using since you say you know nothing about computers ;) is a browser. Firefox is a replacement for it.

Why replace it? Because whether you realize it or not, IE does not comply with web standards, and is a major security risk on your computer. You know all those press releases you hear new viruses reeking havoc on computers? Very often, IE lets 'em in. It is ubiquitous, but not because it is good. Use a standards-compliant browser like Firefox and you'll see web pages the way web designers actually designed them, not the way Microsoft says they should look.

Plus all the cool little extensions, like the iTunes controls, Stumbleupon, etc. It's small and it's free. You really have nothing to lose by trying it out. You don't have to uninstall IE if you don't want to...in fact, use them both at the same time and do a side-by-comparison for yourself.

I'm sure the techies can tell you lots more reasons, but those are my main ones.

51. You sound exactly like me a couple of years ago.
Even after I found out what it was, having little to no computing skills, I was afraid to try it. Then I got brave and downloaded it. Now, I use it all the time.

At first, after having used Internet Explorer for so long, Firefox definitely took some getting used to. New terms for my tired old brain to take in. Tabbed browsing? Extensions? Add-ons? Themes? All foreign language to me.

Took awhile for me to become a regular user. My old Internet Explorer was familiar ground, so why bother with all this new crap? It can sort of be likened to riding a bike, then trading it for a 10-speed. Heck, I 'rode with training wheels' from 1996-2000 - using AOL. Getting rid of that and going with a DSL connection was a huge brave venture for me.

Another personal note - There's a most excellent computer help and support group here if you have any comp related questions. The knowledgeable DUers who post there have been so helpful. No matter how basic or silly some of my questions must seem to them, nobody has openly laughed at me yet.

Sometimes a page will load and anything I rollover the mouse on disappears, my cache gets constantly corrupted showing all images as the blue question mark and other oddities.

I'm not going to archive and install so if these problems don't resolve themselves, I may switch over to FireFox 2

Me too. Ever since updating the OS to 10.4.8 I get random quits, usually when displaying Flash content. I've done all of the usual stuff to fix it, but so far it just happens randomly. I suspect that the Flash plug-in is the culprit. But now everyone has decided that Flash is the way to display movies. Damn. I wish they'd just post the damned MPEG and let us choose our player. Damn.

And the ability to sync my favorites between my laptop and my desktop is very cool (while I'm syncing my address book, e-mail, calendar, etc.). I have a huge list.

I have Firefox as a backup on my computer to see different web designs and the odd page Safari has trouble with. The spell check sounds cool.

By the way, what's a "virus"?

53. I'm a little slow -
Just realized that when the checker detects a misspelled word and underlines it, right-clicking on the word brings a little pop up with the correct spelling. and Clicking on the correct spelling automatically replaces it in the text.

Here I was - trying alternate spellings on my own until I got it right, wondering what good the checker was if it only pointed out mistakes...

Conclusion - Yes, it works like a charm. But this particular operator could use some driving instructions. :)

No, Bloo, I DEMAND that EVERY DUer DO AS I TELL THEM!

Jesus, lighten the fuck up.

I'm recommending something to DUers because I think the built-in spell checker alone might be very helpful, and much quicker/easier than having to use the board's spell check feature. I would fully expect, as usuall, that every DUer WILL use whatever the fuck they want.

Enjoy the day. Have six or seven more cups of coffee.

73. Yup. And DU'ers Should WANT To Use FIREFOX 2! It's Great!
I mean, you might have some unexplained bitterness towards the OP suggestion, and more power to ya for not wanting to use it, but as can be seen many people have appreciated the heads up and suggestion.

I thank the OP for letting the DU community know that a new and improved version was available. Many DU'ers may not have been exposed to Firefox yet that would really like it, so it was pretty cool of the OP to inform us that a new version was available. Not sure where the harm in that is, but whatever.

45. I sometimes use DU to spell-check non-DU messages.
Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 09:47 AM by IanDB1
I just hit "reply" to a message post, paste my text into it, spell-check it, and then copy/paste back into my email or other message.

Of course, this could present a privacy risk, depending on how much we trust DU, and how secure our network traffic is.

And then there's the possibility of forgetting to delete your text after you spell-check it, and you accidentally post it in a forum.

78. You're missing the point
It isn't just that there is a spell checker. Heck, DU has one, too. But Firefox2 spell-checks on the fly, while you're composing your message. I find this infinitely more useful than having to launch ANY external spell checker.

The Mozilla spell-check feature is vastly superior.

49. Upgraded as soon as it came out
and that spell checker is great for an arthritic old bat with poor eyesight.

It's also nice to see links I click displayed in new tabs instead of new windows, reduces the taskbar clutter.

The spell checker could use a somewhat larger vocabulary, it alerts on words like "sesquipedalianism."

However, it beats forgetting to hit DU's spell check tab before I hit "post," and having to go back and edit it.

62. 2.0 has not been released yet.
And the builders are pretty pissed off that it leaked out. That's what I learned on the mozilla forum last night. I don't know the details. But I think it has something to do with servers not being ready to take on the load of the human race downloading the software.

I'd say hold off until it's official.

76. The official site build forum has not shown it as official.
But it IS on their main page. Which is weird.

Also, if you go to Tools and check for updates, it's not there yet.

I'm just saying what I saw in their forum. I'm not a bearer of official news.

I don't know what to make of it. I think they had to put it on the main page due to being leaked. But I don't think it's fully finished. However, it's never fully finished, if you spend time on their forums.

Funny how I get more replies to stupid posts than any of my honest to goodness serious posts. Damn.

It's all ok. (:

You're right about how strange it is, what gets responses. I'd have never guessed this thread would have received more than a dozen replies, never mind making the greatest page.

You do make a good point here...Firefox is open source. It is NEVER finished.

get it to work on DU and also couldn't access my job's web site with it. Tried all the different security/connection settings and no luck. Tech support at my office couldn't get it to work either, so it was necessary for me to go back to IE. When I was using it, it certainly did not prevent any spyware from downloading to my computer, as my spyware program picked up 247 different spyware and phishing thingies on my puter after using Firefox for 2 or 3 days. Otherwise, it's okay and I might learn to love it, if I could use it for work and on DU.

82. Granny, I've never heard of anything like that!
Yikes. There is no reason Firefox shouldn't work on DU as opposed to any other web site. And with all due respect, I don't believe Firefox was responsible for your 247 different spyware/phishing things. You found that out in the new IE feature, didn't you? Should make you suspect right there. I think there was a thread the other day that indicated DU was fingered as a "phishing" site by IE.

87. I prefer Firefox a lot too but can't get some sites with it
So I shuttle between IE and Firefox as a habit. I think it has something to do with resolving the IP's behind my router, because when my router is refreshed it happens with IE too. The difference with IE is that a page comes up with a link I can click then all of a sudden everything works. There is no such animal with firefox, I've checked all through all the options. I posted the question on the firefox forum and never got an answer.

It works without the router. And I've used 2 totally different types of routers with the same result so it isn't specific to the router either. Probably just some sort of weird computer anomaly.

90. I could use some help with Mozilla
My son loaded it on our machine several years ago and it worked fine. Last Spring, he loaded an upgrade and I 've been having problems ever since. First I had to go out and replace my virus protection program because the old one wouldn't run Mozilla at all. Now I still run into a random problem down-loading pages. I have a good connection, but in the middle of the session Mozilla is unable to connect to any Web Page. The problem only goes away if I re-boot the computer once or twice.

101. If you tend to open the same pages when you first log on,
(like I do) You might want to take Morning Coffee for a test run.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2677/

It opens your 'usual hangouts' at one time, instead of having to manually open tab after tab. (I'm so lazy.)
