Just so you know: Katie dropped to 7th place in LA |
|
Behind just about everything.
I have been trying to figure out why I don't care for her - because usually I am a huge supporter of women in media.
Partly, its because I just don't like the sound of her voice. It is hard to listen to.
But she is really tanking.
I'm really curious what will happen. Will they just replace her and move her somewhere else? Will they just try to carry on?
So much money on the line here. CBS has no loyalty to its employees so I'm betting they will just deep six her and try something else.

1. This is CBS Mgmt fault |
|
In an odd way, I don't blame her, per se. She's just somebody who went after an open position, afterall.
But CBS Mgmt screwed the pooch the minute they decided they didn't need a genuine, serious-minded journalist in the anchor chair in first place.

put her in that position. I thought it was crazy the first time I heard they were considering it. She has just done the best job she could given what she was supposed to do.
But even an idiot could have seen that it wouldn't work.
I only fault her because she actually agreed to it.

|
Some say, well, don't blame her - she just went after an open position. I'd say she has an over-inflated opinion of herself and of her mental capacities. And I seriously question the gravitas and intelligence of any grown woman who squeals, "Navy SEALS rock!" on national television.

I'm not saying she's completely blameless. I am saying the primary blame lies w/ CBS mgmt who decided they wanted to hired her (or someone like her) in the first place. She's a completely different animal than a real journalist.
And I agree with you that she overreached.

By way of contrast, Martha Stewart is SMART enough to be a newscaster; but she hasn't had the training or background. I have no doubt she would have laughed in their collective corporate face if CBS News has approached her with a similar job offer. She is intelligent enough to know where her many talents lie. But, let's face it, The CBS Evening News With Martha Stewart would be a hell of a lot better program than what they've got now.
It is so sad at this late date with so many qualified women and men out there, CBS decided to go with an airhead "personality."
I feel no symapthy for Katie at all. She deserves to become, and is fast becoming, a national joke, albeit an extremely over-paid one.

2. She's tanking because she alienated the CBS audience |
|
The CBS audience was mostly a liberal one, since CBS occasionally ran stories that were outside the GOP propaganda drumbeat.
They stupidly shifted the broadcast to the far right, having eleven days (more than two weeks!) of nothing but right wing gasbags on the "free speech" segment. The message that only far right lunatics had any place on that newscast was unmistakable.
If she had appeared behind a desk instead of prancing around a living room stage set and if she'd read the news instead of editorializing and if she'd had any sort of balance in those gasbag segments, people might still be watching.
They're not. CBS just boiled the frog too fast.

|
But I thought they would probably try and fix it really fast. I guess they haven't. Now that they have lost most of their old, loyal viewers it will be just impossible to get them back. Most people just moved over to NBC. He is doing really well. And I think ABC is also really up.

5. Thanks for the good news! |
|
I'll bet Katie is "reassigned" to another department where her "experience and abilities are better utilized." Look for special segments on 60 Minutes or a series of celebrity specials for the network, similar to Baba Wawa at ABC.
Hey, maybe CBS could have something during daytime like The View and Katie could sit at the head of the table?
The dismal ratings couldn't happen to a more deserving person. They should have known this would happen. There are so many other more qualified people out there. Katie is in over her head.

11. I don't think she could do 60 Minutes. Their reporters go all |
|
over the world - some really risky stuff.
Last week the reporter snuck into Darfur to get his story. It got really hairy there for a while.
She refuses to do that sort of thing (and I don't think she is wrong about that being a single mother of two kids) but she shouldn't expect to get the good news stories if she won't go where she needs to go.

My idealism trips me up concerning broadcast news. Just report a story and leave it up to the viewer to decide. It can be done. Which leads back to your original post. Katie is Kondescending to her viewers. Either she thinks we are all old and senile or too stewpid to fully grasp anything of substance.
Well that and her desk makes her arse look fat.

26. News? There's News On Local Television? |
|
My wife watches the local and network news (lately it's NBC by default)...I can't stomache either...since the content is so lame that it's more like reading a tabloid than getting any substansive information. There's more time dedicated to Mr. Food or whose screwing who in Hollywood or some medical scare. If there's any real news, it's packaged in soundbites that lack any context and can be easily manipulated.
This is the "lead in" Katie gets on most of her affiliates. Then what does she offer? More of the same crap. No wonder so many people tune into the Daily Show for "Real" news these days.

27. CBS Deserves to go to the scrap-heap of history for their stupidity |
|
They got their panties in a twist about Dan Rather, because some rather vocal minority pitched a hissy-fit about some documents, that still to this day, I have seen no proof were fabricated. Never mind that no one can produce any shread of evidence, any witnesses, any paperwork, ANYTHING that counters the premise of the story...THAT BUSH FAILED TO LIVE UP TO HIS OBLIGATION TO THE NATIONAL GUARD.
Then, in an example of even greater stupidity, they buy into the bogus "liberal media" crap, and think; "you know what, we'll prove we're not liberal, we'll have a Free Speech segment and invite Limpballs, Insanity, and every other wing-nut cookie cutter Republican apologist to speak out. That way, we'll prove we're not biased, and the wing-nuts will have to stop calling us the 'liberal media'"
Poor CBS. If they were smart, they would realize that nothing they could do would stop the wing-nuts from labeling them as "liberally biased". That's because the "liberal bias" argument has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TRUTH. The Repukes know that if America ever wakes up and realizes that there IS NO LIBERAL BIAS in the media, their days of ruling the country are over, and they go back to being on the fringe of our society...WHERE THEY BELONG.
The "liberal media" myth is something that they will never give up. It's too important to them. Anytime the facts rear back and kick them in the nuts, they scream "liberal media" and they don't have to respond to the issue.
CBS' attempt to appease the wing-nuts has blown up in their face. Sad for a network that gave us Murrow and Cronkite
