Republican and Democratic strategists agree that 10 GOP-held House seats are now in grave danger of flipping. Where the two sides differ is over how many more seats are teetering on the edge.
The most optimistic Republicans -- and based on his press conference yesterday, that includes President Bush -- say they can still keep the majority. Most Democratic observers and believe a Democratic majority is all but certain. The president warned them not to start dancing in the end zone before they score the touchdown.
On our list of 35 of the most competitive House races, we now rate 10 Republican-held seats as leaning Democratic. This is up from the seven GOP seats initially rated as "Leans Democrat" on the Countdown when we started earlier this week. The three new races we have moved to the "Leans Democrat" category are New York's 24th, Iowa's 1st and Pennsylvania's 7th.
The contests in New York and Iowa are in open seats being vacated by Republican incumbents. In New York, national Democrats have successfully labeled Republican state Sen. Ray Meier (R) as a tax-raiser -- a rarity in today’s politics. In Iowa, the sour national climate has combined with the Democratic-leanings of eastern Iowa to make attorney Bruce Braley (D) a favorite over restaurateur Mike Whalen (R).
