28. Why not?
Why can't one person stand up there and hold out for what he/she believes is right? Are we that bound by process that one citizen can't speak his/her mind? Screw the votes. Just speak his mind and let the people hear. Maybe the votes will come then. Don't they have the right to change their votes within a certain time period?

53. Because we can't do it otherwise. They just use rules against us.
We are the minority party. We don't have the votes. That is why even bad Dems can be important. We need 41 votes, 3/5 of Senate have to agree to keep talking-otherwise
they can decide to take the vote.

They don't do it ala Mr. Smith anymore. He has to presuade the other Dems to vote against cloture. He can't "Filibuster" alone. What his opffice must mean , and has already been posted, Kerry will "support " a Filibuster. He is trying to line up votes and get the other Senators to join him.

I think they can! These are two different votes!!

What a power move, if Reid has been telling the Dems, "Look, vote the way you feel you need to vote to appease the conservatives in your state, but STAND WITH US WHEN WE FILIBUSTER!"

Now THAT is a brilliant idea!!!

47. Me too. We have 4 traitors already Dems voting for Scalito...
That may mean that we would have a max of 41 votes against.
But some of them , like Landreau have said they won't filibuster, so we won't have enough to sustain a filibuster...That would take 41 "committed" Democrats...
I feel sick.

Keep calling Landreau, but don't hold your breath.

CALL SENATOR BYRD NOW - READ THIS

I just got off the phone with the Byrd's office in Washington. I told them I was constituent from West Virginia, and that I could not believe that the Senator would vote for Alito given his record against workers - he just came out with the mine safety issue yesterday, how could he possibly vote for him.

The woman told me because I was from West Virginia that she could tell me 90% of the calls were in FAVOR of him.

Please all you 'West Virginia' people - CALL NOW.

She also told me HE HAS NOT DECIDED YET.

61. If you haven't already signed his letter, then do so now
Kerry is asking for signatures on the letter that he will read on the Senate floor.

Help give him ammo, the more names he reads the longer he will have to let America know we are not alone.

Sign Today, I've signed it have YOU....

http://www.johnkerry.com/action/alito/

Dear Senators,
I am writing to ask that you vote against Samuel Alito’s nomination to the Supreme Court and work hard to convince other Senators to join you.

Judge Alito does not represent my values. He does not represent mainstream American values. I think it’s time that the United States Senate confirms once and for all that extreme ideology has no place on the highest court in the land.

This is a critical fight for the future of our country. It’s no time to sit on the sidelines. That’s why I’ve taken the time to sign this letter and pass it along to my friends and neighbors. And I hope that’s why you’ll step up to the plate and do the right thing for America: defeat Samuel Alito.

I am honored to join John Kerry by putting my name in the Congressional Record against Judge Alito. I call on you to do the same with your vote.

just kidding but this is what I told her.

1st. Thanks for the "no" vote.

2nd. We have to filibuster whether it is successful or not. We have to force a vote on a filibuster cloture so that people can see who supports a filibuster and who won't. If we don't there is going to be a huge backlash agaist ALL Democrats in the Senate.

We the Democratic base need to know who represents us.
