I love this guy. He was always a decent chap, or seemed so to me. Obviously talented.
And since he was diagnosed, he has matured immensely and become a great spokesman for research -- stem cell and otherwise as well.
No one better suited or skilled to handle the likes of the limp one and his mockery!
GO GET 'EM, Mike!

vacation and missed this broadcast.
Thanks to Crooks and Liars, too.
I feel so badly for Michael J. Fox. One of my keenest memories is seeing my uncle Nathan Miller, a professor at Carnegie Tech, have this terrible disease. He ended up in an old age home and I saw him when I was about 13 years old. The vision will never leave me. He was pale, mute, shaking, unable to move except randomly. I was told that his mind was fine. It was just his body that was affected by this dreadful disease. I thought it was the worst thing I'd ever seen.
Now his daughter, my first cousin, age 73, has this awful disease. It was a complete surprise because she had been told all her life that Parkinson's Disease was not inherited. She takes medication and she's doing quite well. I guess getting it later in life is not as bad as having it as young as Michael J. Fox.
Rush Limbaugh should rot in hell for making those comments. What a scruffy person!
In peace,

I heard Tom Oliphant talking about this on Al's show today, what he thinks, the reason why the thuglicans have chosen to take Michael J. Fox down so hard has to do with their polling or something. Undecideds, after seeing the ad overwhelmingly change their minds on it. This attack on him is calculated Oliphant says, and knowing there would be blowback they feel they have to take that chance because the ad is just too powerful. The hate radio thugs are so cruel, but of course Rush as usual went way over-the-top. What sweeeeet irony it would be if Limbaugh's act of meanness puts Caskill over the top and helps her win. And with a little luck maybe we take the Senate.

38. I remember a 'Family Ties' show that Michael did. |
|
I think it was the last season. It was an episode where he was on screen for about 20 minutes, all by himself. There was a lot of publicity about the episode at the time. What I remember is that he was just riveting. It was probably the most compelling and impressive performances that I have ever seen. He is extremely talented, and it's really a shame that he has had to deal with such a devastating illness at such a young age.
My respect for MJF has grown by leaps this last week.

yah, I believe that episode was called "A:my name is Alex", about a friend of his who died in a car crash, that he was supposed to be in. He's really good.
Anyway, about this whole ad thing, the dumb thing about what the asshole Repubs are saying, is i'm pretty sure Fox, and Christopher Reeve before him totally believe that stem cell research will NOT help them in their lifetimes. That makes them even more selfless.
That stupid Republican ad, where dumbass Kurt Warner says, "Stem cell research won't help anybody for 15 years", could be the dumbest statement i've ever heard somebody that's supposedly intelligent said.
John F Kennedy 1961. "I'd like to see the US go to the moon, but it might take 8 years, so forget it"

is "what about adult stem cells!"
Adult stem cells can't grow into insulin producing beta cells, for instance. There are some things they CAN do and those need to be studied as well. But many right wingers feel it is the answer to any argument for embryonic stem cell research.
On the 15 year thing - I worked tirelessly for Clinton his first run for President. I was a state delegate for him. I was so excited when he was elected because of his stance on stem cell research. It was my last chance bid at a cure because I knew it would take years.
The Republican Congress thwarted him and, now, nearly 15 years later, here we are. Think of where we could be.

The sun revolves around the earth, where the earth itself is flat, where evolution is not proven - I imagine it might take a THOUSAND years to get somewhere on stem cell research.
It's the age old dispute between science and religion, which goes back, if I remember this correctly, some four or six thousand years to the first few days after this planet was created.

Fearless, courageous, and able to smack down Rush Limpballs without even trying very hard. Watching Limpballs mock Fox was beyond words, much worse than merely reading about what he said and did.
Fox could just sit there and beat Limpballs on his good looks alone! Add in his brains, courage, ethics, generosity and sincerity, and Limpballs should just slither back into the hole from whence he crawled. Despicable.

...that people like Michael Fox, people that are admired and obviously have something serious to say, wouldn't allow questioners like Couric to ask those silly questions...as if a 'rush limbaugh' had any right to challenge Fox in the first place. Michael should simply say that 'I have nothing but contempt for the Rush Limbaugh's of this country. They - and you know who they are - are nothing but rabble-rousers, attempting to 'rouse the rabble' and I won't respond to his, or their, crap. Now if you want to understand more about this disease and the prospects for stem-cell research leading to a cure, Katie, then ask me some serious questions.'...yeah, that's what I'd like to hear.

49. Michael J. Fox Is An Incredible Human Being... |
|
And Rush Limbaugh is nothing but a lying POS. My husband lost an Aunt to Parkinson's disease Mr. Limbaugh, and SHE SHOOK, and it was heartbreaking to watch her suffer even WITH medications. It is a horrible disease that no one should have to endure, and if you would take your partisan head out of your butt long enough to actually seek FACTS, you might come to the realization that we are talking about SAVING human lives.
Michael J. Fox is an incredible human being to speak out for others in the condition he is in. I give him much credit and respect and stand with him in his cause to SAVE human lives. It is typical as well, that two faced phonies like Rush Limbaugh constantly talk about respecting human life while the murderers they support do nothing but TAKE human life. SHAME ON YOU.
I wish you all the best, Mr. Fox, and my prayers are with you.

Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 11:48 AM by TwoSparkles
...I've ever seen on DU. I have tears welling in my eyes.
There's a reason for everything. Maybe Rush Limbaugh's entire lot in life was to be a miserable person--and mock Michael J Fox--so Fox could have a platform to help ALL Americans see how they are being bamboozled by pre-packaged vitriol disguised as information.
This country--with Limbaugh leading the charge--has used political venom, lies and shock to divide this country and to create bitter disagreement.
Fox totally tells it like it is---and how it should be. We should respect and honor those who have thought about stem cell research, prayed and disagree. On the other hand, those who have prayed and have thought about it--and decided that embryonic stem cell research should move forward--should also be respected.
We all need to stop the venom. Republicans and these radio hosts only succeed because venom, mockery, cutting down people and humiliation is entertaining to some. We need to rise to a better level. People are just lazy. Rush and the Reps know this. If it's funny, outrageous and appealing to the lowest levels of decency--then people pay attention to politics. So we get Rush and his bunk.
Fox told us how we could be. How it should be.
And he spelled it out so well, when he said that those who want to use these cells to help cure diseases--- are the pro life side. That is the pro-life stance. Those embryos are being thrown into the trash. What's so pro-life about that? Where are all of the protesters when those embryos were being hauled to the dumpster?
They've made this a political issue, to incite "the base"...and in the end, they're harming people and impeding science that could heal.
Blessings to Fox...I am just stunned by his courage and his character, and for his ability to articulate this issue so beautifully.

57. I believe this interview will be remembered....... |
|
as a signal event in future histories of our times.
The contrast between the child-man Limbaugh and the mature, heroic MJ Fox is just too perfectly symbolic of the death (knock on wood) of the mean-spiritedness of the last 25 years.
Michael J, you have inspired my life as well!

MJF as the man who got this whole thing rolling in the right direction! I can only pray that some research will develop quickly enough so we may all have a long, long, time with this courageous, classy and wonderful man. No one should ever suffer like this, I wouldn't even wish it on Rush or any of the other swine who would prevent research.
But I'd guarantee that none of them could handle such an affliction with one one hundredth of the class and grace the MJF does. God bless you, Michael, and I hope you're around for a good long time.

83. Michael J. Fox said that |
|
and I cheered when he pointed out that being attacked by Rush, he got people talking about stem cell research just days before the election. He said if he had to take some hits so that he could get people thinking about it, he was happy to do that.
He is such an incredible man.

69. The problem I have with the anti-stem cell platform... |
|
...is very simple, a lot of these people are against using cells that no longer serve any purpose or that can be farmed out/cloned. These cells are very far from being a full fledged human individual. I.e. a fetus/life/human what have you.
A lot of these people get their panties tied up when discussing abortion, yet they refuse to increase any sort of social coverage/safety net to care for the children that may be born into a literal hell and that was the reason why they wanted to be aborted to begin with. And these are the same people who will spend millions defending a position that is purely ignorant of scientific facts since they rather be pragmatic than spending five minutes of their precious life trying to understand the problem. Is as if they consider a few mother cells more important that full fledged humans, it is just scary to me. The priority scale is so skewed that is almost like a bad episode of schizophrenia. I just fail to see these same people who are so enamored with life take to the streets to stop the war in which real, breathing human beings get blown to pieces. These same people would have their heads explode when they learn that under their standards they commit mass murder every day (humans send dead cells by the millions, esp your skin every day).
Anyhow, I guess the Republican mantra is: "We care immensely about you before you are even born, or when you are about to die, in the time in between you are on your own buster..."
Screw the whole bunch of them. If this is what "compassionate Conservative" is all about: making fun of the weak and sick, then they can stick it up their diseased rectums. Karma has a way, in the end nature equalizes things.

I'm so glad someone is out there saying this. My husband just died of colon cancer - and we thought it was a blessing, because for the past few years, he also suffered from ALS. It's a sad commentary on a life when cancer is a blessing, but ALS is SO horrible, and I was terrified of the suffering he would have to go through.
When I wrote his obit, I said, in lieu of flowers, donations to any organization doing stem cell research. I'm in the Bible belt - didn't get any donations, but we made our point, I hope.
