Just got back from "Shut Up and Sing." Can I marry a Dixie Chick?
doc director Barbara Kopple has done it again, producing a great music doc that's more than just a performance piece. Deftly cutting from 2003 to the making of their current, no-apologies album, the film shows how the far right miscalculated in trying to shut the "Chicks" up, turning a band that was slowly maturing into a group that became fully radicalized.

Natalie Maines is particularly full of spunk and vigor, and in one aside to the camera, she even tops her infamous anti-Bush remarks that started the whole fandango (I'll let DUers be surprised).

Plus, the Freeptards even get some on-screen time for the "credit" behind the odious boycott.

Dixies singing songs, having babies, crying tears, swearing like sailors, arguing with managers, and generally being largehearted artists in the middle of something bigger than themselves. Villager calls it as another "best Doc" Oscar nomination for Kopple.

Recommended to all DUers. I gotta get that new CD now...

1. Take a number!
And be prepared to stand in line
behind me AND my girlfriend!

Dixie Chicks are EVERYTHING that I find attractive
in a human being: smart, caring, funny, talented...
have I mentioned SMART?

5. Your number is '3', from where I sit.
Oughta be JUUUST high enough to keep everyone happy, knowhutImean?

The way I figure it: We let my sweetie do all the talkin,
while you and I bar the door against the rampaging hordes.

I've done this kinda thing before; it generally works out
for the best in the long run, if you can get past the pain
and the blood.

Then again, what doesn't?

7. ONE shot? Geez, you kids today!
This ain't those 3 strippers me and my bud picked up
in the Smithfield NC Walmart parkinglot at 3:00am back in '99...
this is the big leagues!

DUDE, we're talking DixieChicks here! You really think we can
do _THAT_ 3-on-3 math with just a shot apiece?

I'm starting to have some serious DOUBTS about this whole plan!

3. Thanks for the report! I'm looking forward to seeing it. I am so proud of
these young women. They ARE America. The country we love. The country we nearly lost. The country we are going to take back.

Believe it!

9. NBC REFUSES ADS FOR DIXIE CHICKS MOVIE
and I know this is from the sludge report, but I thought it was very interesting.....

In an Ironic Twist of Events, NBC and The CW Television Network Refuse to Air Ads for Documentary Focusing on Freedom of Speech

NBC Claims that the Network “Cannot Accept These Spots as They are Disparaging to President Bush”

The CW Television Network that the Network Does “Not have Appropriate Programming in which to Schedule this Spot”

NBC and The CW Television Network have taken a stand against the Dixie’s Chicks new documentary “Shut Up & Sing” a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible political and media fallout that occurred in 2003 after the Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines said that she was "ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." “Shut Up & Sing” opens in theaters in NY and Los Angeles on Friday and in theaters nationwide on November 10th.

NBC responded to a clearance report submitted by the Weinstein Company’s media agency saying that the network “cannot accept these spots as they are disparaging to President Bush.”

12. They are going for the same strategy as the radio stations
refusing advertising for their concerts. How about a revenge strategy? Boycott of NBC advertisers.

13. I can't wait to see it.....
I have seen a few of the spots on t.v.....and it looks so good. Anyone one know when it's going national? I probably wont be able to see it until it comes out for rent, but maybe I will get lucky. Love the Chicks even more, knowing how brave they are to speak their minds in such a hostile enviroment.
