2. I think more of us agree on most issues, more
than the neocons would have us believe anyway.

My mom is a republican who will NOT vote for any republicans this time. She's a lifer as well so that tells me a lot about who agrees with whom.

That's why I worry a bit me about diebold.

5. I don't know if it's a ridiculous question.
It strikes me as one arising from youth though. I've encountered this question from teenagers and young adults quite a bit. They have not experienced bilateral rancor at this level before and are alarmed.

7. now by far in absolute terms
Lets be generous with the population during the civil war and make it 40millions. Today at 300million,
the number of people who are ruthlessly divided is far more, and the number of persons in slavery is
far more (worldwide) with the numbers in wage serfdom also massive to the tune of the entire population
during the civil war... the entire civil war population today lives without health treatment.

As well, the civil war, was global, and is global today. The new antietem is bagdhad, where the confederate
forces once again seek to enslave the people fighting for their freedom, a nation with the population
of the US during its civil war is fighting a civil war that is nigh achieving similar deaths and
murder rates, similar divisions within the family. No its far worse now, as this war is the
cynical reduction of all western liberalism in to totalitarian facism, screwing the population
so hard, they don't even have the left over energy to oppose.

8. Not in my family
There are 8 of us siblings all now in our golden years. We range in politics from the old hippie left to a dittohead far right. We are still and for ever will be each others best friend. We just do not discuss politics.

PS Even our dittohead is deep down a really fine person, who just is not very informed.

13. I don't think we are very far from riots or civil unrest.
And when the religious extremist nutcases decided to defend their corporatist masters, the war would be on.

The emotional and moral tinderbox is already there.

10. The Civil war never actually ended.
The Civil war never actually ended.

The "losing" side simply went underground and continued
the war using various forms of insurgency.

(And, no, before anyone asks, I'm *NOT* kidding. Think about
the Ku Klux Klan and lynchings, think about sheriffs, dogs,
and firehoses, think about Selma, and political assasinations,
blown up churches, blown up women's clinics, etc., etc.)

Time to review your American History!

Or, if you just want a colorful depiction of doom, check out the Poetic Edda.

44.Now Garm howls loud before Gnipahellir,
The fetters will burst, and the wolf run free;
Much do I know, and more can see
Of the fate of the gods, the mighty in fight.

45.Brothers shall fight and fell each other,
And sisters sons shall kinship stain;
Hard it is on earth, with mighty whoredom;
Axe-time, sword-time, shields are sundered,
Wind-time, wolf-time, ere the world falls;
Nor ever shall men each other spare.

46.Fast moves the sons of Min, and fate
Is heard in the note of the Gjallarhorn;
Loud blows Heimdall, the horn is aloft,
In fear quake all who on Hel-roads are.

47.Yggdrasil shakes, and shiver on high
The ancient limbs, and the giant is loose;
To the head of Mim does Othin give heed,
But the kinsman of Surt shall slay him soon.
How fare the gods? how fare the elves?
All Jotunheim groans, the gods are at council;
Loud roar the dwarfs by the doors of stone,
The masters of the rocks; would you know yet more?

12. No, the two are not comparable, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be
very concerned right now.
