Hah, hah, hah... CNN won't air commercials for Death of a President...

Miles O'Brien just interviewed the director of the movie. The interchange was fairly inoccous and uneventful. Immediately following the talk, however, O'Brien announced that CNN won't air commercials for the movie because of its "Extreme Content". Wanna bet no one at CNN has even previewed the film!?

1. I don't blame them

Banning ads for a film like "Fahrenheit 9/11" is one thing (which they didn't, thank goodness). This movie depicts the shooting of the current president. Do they or anyone else really want that kind of negative publicity?

I don't fault media outlets for rejecting advertising for this film. That is their choice, and given the subject matter, I can't say I blame them.

I have seen a short clip of the film on YouTube, depicting the 'assassination' and the 'aftermath'. The movie is done in a fake documentary style, and its realism is uncanny. As a movie (apart from the subject matter) it looks intriguing yet filled with too many fake boring talking heads. I don't feel all that comfortable with it depicting the current president, though.

"That's My Bush" is one thing. This is going a tad too far.

However, on the commercial banning front, I do have more of a problem with NBC and CW banning ads for the current Dixie Chicks movie due to bashing of Bush (if Drudge is to be believed). That is completely wrong.

2. I saw an ad for it on MSNBC during Countdown (Midnight)

I also saw the film tonight. I found it to be a very good film. Chilling. Even though I want Bush out of office, I certainly would not want it to happen in this manner. Having been through that horrible 5 years in the 60's when we lost JFK, MLK and RFK to assassins I would never want this to happen again.

But to tell this story I felt the filmmaker could not make the President a fictional character. Some other event could have been chosen though to tell the story such as another terrorist attack, but I can't fault the filmmaker for choosing to tell it the way he did.

I didn't even feel it demonized Cheney, but just showed how he and our government would use this event to put a Patriot Act III in to force, jail people w/o rights, search for an excuse to go to war against another ME country, etc. And how many would see these as necessary rights.

It certainly got me to thinking. What excesses in a time of the Cold War could have been sought after the assassination of JFK?
