I desperately need help with some research.
I'm compiling a list of some of the emerging start-up companies that are working on devices or products that could help to fight global warming. How can I find these interesting small (or large) companies and what they are doing? If you know any, list them for me please. If you know of a website or an organization with this info, please share it. It would so greatly appreciated, it's for a very good cause.
Thanks.

1. There are some here
Did a Google search using "start up companies fighting global warming", and got some hits. Maybe try using variations of the keywords I used.

3. Check out Ormat Technologies...
.. not really start up, they went public last year, nice green company, stock at one point was up 300% from it's IPO price...now only trading up 256%....

4. I would start at a conference site
like the bioneers conference held last weekend in San Rafael. There's also been a few greenbuilding or environmental conferences in SF recently. I'd then look at who was presenting and/or had booths. You'll find out many of the companies involved. I'd then send an email to some of the Green/social investment finance funds and ask for a list (They present at these conferences). I bet they have lists.

6. PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (PBW)
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 11:00 AM by Ellis Wyatt
is an ETF that invests in emerging alternate (ethanol, solar, etc) energy sources as well as conservation companies.

You can go look up that fund which will have a list of all their holdings, which will give you a jump start on a bunch of names.

Additionally, you can look at the Merriman Next Generation Index (http://www.merrimanco.com/investment_bank/research/NGE_index.php) for a similar excercise. On the right of the web page, you can track all of the companies that make up the index.

While you can't invest in the NGE, you can invest in PBW, which I think is a great investment for obvious reasons, but it's also a good time to buy in because with the fall of oil prices as a run-up to the election, the ETF has fallen a bit and is near recent lows. I picked up more two weeks ago, and it's already up 5%

8. Try the patent office
Here is a listing of the currently posted pre-grant patent publications (patents that have been submitted but haven't yet been granted or denied) that mention the terms "global" and "warming" in the abstract. I listed these first because they are usually the newer ones. Patent applications are published about a year after they have been submitted to the patent office (if they have met all the requirements to be considered for the granting of a full patent - believe me, there is more information than you want to know about the requirements to be considered).

To check out these patent applications go to: http://appft1.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.html and either type in the number or copy and paste it in the search box (I've highlighted the first number in both lists so you'll know which numbers you need to enter). You'll find out who submitted the patent and can determine if it is an individual or someone who has assigned their interest in the invention to a company.

Lighting up the $1 trillion power market

Silicon Valley has changed the world once. Now, thanks to a wave of investment and innovation in solar power, it's on to the next revolution: A massive disruption of the U.S. electricity market.

(Business 2.0 Magazine) -- There's a missile-bunker vibe you get when walking into Solaicx, a Silicon Valley startup that manufactures the silicon wafers that are the building blocks of solar panels.

10. Check out the "Apollo Alliance"
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 11:33 AM by scarletwoman
http://www.apolloalliance.org/

Their agenda is energy self-suffiency and job creation. There's a story featured on the home page (scroll down) about the company ("Energy Innovations") that is building "the largest solar installation on a corporate site in the U.S. and one of the largest in the world." for Google headquarters.

Also click around other sections of the site, there may be other relevant information you could use.

The SES Solar Dish Stirling technology is well beyond the research and development stage, with more than 20 years of recorded operating history. The equipment is well characterized with over 25,000 hours of on-sun time. Since 1984, the Company's solar dish Stirling equipment has held the world's efficiency record for converting solar energy into grid-quality electricity. SES has teamed with the U.S. Department of Energy and Sun-Labs (NREL and Sandia National Laboratories) to endurance test and commercialize the SES solar Stirling system.
