Need A Break? AMC Is Showing Monsterfest This Week
If you're growing tired of the 24/7 cable stations and their GOTV efforts for the GOP, take
a break at AMC. They're showing all of the old B&W monster movies. So far today I've seen
Karloff's "The Mummy" (which I had watched on DVD last week) and I'm now watching
"The Mummy's Hand (1940)." The 1962 Herbert Lom Version of "Phantom of the Opera" is up
next, followed by Albert Finney in "Wolfen."

Why not try a different kind of monster for a bit?

1. I'm tired of the Halloweens. Let's see some true CLASSICS..
They used to show Hammer films (Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing) now it's Halloween I-Infinity and Friday the 13th... These aren't horror films. They're soft kiddie porn. Where's Psycho? Where's Night of the Hunter? Even Play Misty for Me would be preferable to the remake of 13 Ghosts.

3. I just can't watch AMC. Mucho commercials, and they cut movies. TCM is
the only way to watch films. Uncut and commercial-free. (No, I don't work for them.)

They're showing Vincent Price on Halloween.

The Masque of the Red Death
House of Usher
The Abominable Dr. Phibes
Diary of a Madman

8. I remember when AMC used to show their movies uncut and with
no commercials. They also used to show classic movies (hence the name American Movie Classics).

14. If you really want scary, check out Asian horror.
Most of the popular ones are Japanese, but not exclusively. Many of the more successful horror movies shown here, such as The Ring and The Grudge, were based on Japanese movies that are, in many ways, superior (although I really liked the The Ring as a remake). These movies are deeply disturbing, often gruesome, and so much better than the usual predictable Hollywood fare (3 in 4 of which are remakes), which I don't find scary at all in most cases.

Here's a short list, in no particular order, of movie you probably haven't seen:

Ringu (http://imdb.com/title/tt0178868/) - This is the original on which The Ring was based. It contains some references to Japanese history/culture that may be lost on the average American, but it's still worth watching.

Audition (http://imdb.com/title/tt0235198/) - Profoundly disturbing on many levels, especially because the victim is so likable.

Gozu (http://imdb.com/title/tt0361668/) - More weird than scary, but definitely disturbing and creepy ala David Lynch, who the director sites as an influence.

Ju-On: The Grudge (http://imdb.com/title/tt0364385/) - This is the movie The Grudge was based on, and I think it's superior in many ways.

Three...Extremes (http://imdb.com/title/tt0420251/) - Three creepy and disturbing shorts.

Suicide Club (http://imdb.com/title/tt0312843/) - The horror of popular culture.

it intense.

But there's nothing like 1930's through 1950's cheap horror and sci-fi. They are so fun.
