I hate that Randi is an hour less than her old time slot. |

They made a mistake IMO. I like Rachel as a person, but I don't like her show all that much. Sorry Rachel fans. As it stands I turn off AAR after Randi's show is over and don't turn it on again until Sam in the morning. I used to listen all day until 11:00pm.

4. The thing is, four-hour talk shows are pretty rare |
|
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 05:24 PM by CaseyBuck
I think the only reason Randi was 4 hours in the first place, was that it was because she was 4 hours long during the WJNO days.
Two or three hours is standard procedure for a talk show shift. Besides, there were days that you could tell that Randi was stretching for time on that last hour...
And starting Monday, you'll get an alternative to Rachel and the rest of the AAR lineup from 6 PM–midnight on the new Nova M Network, with Peter B. Collins and Mike Malloy!

14. Thanks for the link. There are so many new kinds of communications |
|
these days. I can hardly keep up with it.
I am on SAP (Secondary Audio Programming), a sub-channel of VHF TV station. It's audio only, but utilized 24/7 by Oregon Public Broadcasting for a whole other station called "Golden Hours". Most people don't know much about it, but we do project 80,000 to 100,000 available audience members in Oregon and southern Washington. In other markets, SAP is used for "described video" for the blind as well as translation into other languages, primarily Spanish in this country.
Also, I'm heard on Web Radio Audio Information Network (WRAIN), which heard on the Internet. That's Omni Media Network, affiliated with some of the blind organizations here in Oregon.
Then, there's regular old "terrestrial" radio -- Amplitude Modification (AM) and Frequency Modulation (FM). I remember when they opened up WEEI-FM in Boston and almost begged people to try it out.
Now, I'm trying to get used to the idea of satellite radio, high definition radio, plus all the options for live, delay, and rebroadcast on the internet.
Fascinating. I wish I could talk with Dr. Sidney Head, who was the first communications professor I had at the University of Miami. He'd would be thoroughly amazed!

5. Juggled again here in Portland on KPOJ. Not as interesting as before. |
|
Sam Seder comes on in the evening. I think that is a terrible move, since all the day's events have already happened in the morning drive time. This program is not even on my radar now due to the delay.
Ed Schultz is the fellow I listen to the most from 12 Noon to 3 PM.
Randi is OK, but not when she takes no telephone calls and rehashes what's in her brain over and over. I love her and her brain to death, but... that's not what talk shows are about. Also, I get pretty bored with the New York accent. However, I know what it's like to talk four hours a day six days a week (that's 24 hours a week, folks!). I was very grateful when my shift was cut to 10 AM to 2 PM FIVE days each week.
Trust me... It's really tough to keep it fresh and interesting. Burnout is high and so is repetition.

12. It's possible that KPOJ may replace Seder at 6 PM with Mike Malloy |
|
Remember, Mike will be on an hour earlier (9 PM–midnight ET instead of 10 PM–1 AM ET). Schedule-wise, it would be a piece of cake, especially now that Randi ends an hour earlier, too.
I think it would be wise for KPOJ to have a live, call-in show at 6 PM instead of a 12-hour delayed show, though it may piss off the Sam Seder fans.

operations manager at KPOJ about "The Sam Seder Show" not being current due to the the full day delay of this show.
Personally, I like Sam Seder but won't listen much now.
Thanks for your comments. Are you in media here in Oregon? Your personal profile says you're in Milwaukie -- I'm in Beaverton. Just curious...

We went a couple of times, but our schedule is so hectic, we just can't commit to getting there most months.
DUer Viva la Revolution is our contact. She posts the information on the Oregon forum. Lots of great people at these get-togethers.
Nice to meet you at the DU!

6. Three hours in a network syndication standard |
|
Locally programmed stations traditionally used 4 hour shifts, but doing talk, 3 hours will WEAR YOU OUT. I've done it.

9. Me, too. See my post #5. Thank goodness for good guests and |

the ability to talk about a lot more than just politics. That during those first years as the only female talk host with a full-time, daily show (including Saturdays) in Boston.
I did it and I'm proud!

17. Thank God for SHOW PREP |
|
I would prepare TWICE the material needed every day! We had a great setup. I did show prep at home for 2 hours, then my co-host would pick me up and drive the 1/2 hour to the station. I would brief him on guests, subjects, and sometime NOT telling him things to catch him off guard.
We'd run into the station about 1/2 hour before airtime, I'd get MP3s and other audio into the system with our engineer. We had a station-provided board op. I have alot of board experience, but when doing talk I like to have the board done by someone else. I'd plug in my laptop, fire up Sonicart, load my drops, open a show log in Excel and get on the Google...
3 hours of live talk, with a cohost, guests and callers is EXHAUSTING. We would often be half-asleep by the time we got done and drove home.

I've become attached to her. What a powerhouse mind. What an outlook. Fall down. Writhe. I am not worthy.

11. I like it, because I LOVE Rachel Maddow! |
|
Her show is so much more lively and information-packed. Better guests, too.
Randi just goes on and on endlessly about the same theme, doesn't let callers talk, is rude. She is totally full of herself.
Sorry, but I had to get that out.
