WE NEED TO A CLARIFICATION POST - WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO STOP ALITO
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 03:49 PM by debbierlus
From my understanding, Byrd, Nelson, and one other won't support filibuster

46 (counting Jeffords the independent)
-3

43

Feinstein, Salaazar, and Landrieu are saying they are against the filibuster.

40

Did I leave anyone out....

Will Liberman filibuster?

We need to clarify the holdout and put all our pressure on them....

The three voting for Alito (TRAITORS) are not our hope. So, we must call the holdouts on the filibuster and demand they do that....

Anyone?

1. Given his pretty strong statements today, I wouldn't be surprised if
Lieberman would filibuster...

6. I think Lieberman is a little scared of the competition!
Thank goodness for small favors.

3. DiFi may surprise us. Her speech today was adamantly against ScAlito.
After hearing her, I don't know how she COULDN'T support a filibuster. She'll lose the female vote and support if she doesn't support a filibuster.

9. I just called and let her office know
that I'm a californian and support the filibuster, and that she should stand with Kerry, the NYT, and others who are calling publicly for the filibuster. If you dont use it now, when? not only is a womens right to choose on the line, so is the imperial presidency. Also I asked her to frame the issue to Byrd so that he can realize what a threat to the laws of the country alito will be.

10. the Senate staffers are getting keen on asking for zip codes
and addresses. I would work on your home Senators - since they are filtering out the others.

11. Randi just said they just might get the votes for a filibuster

Another thought...Olympia Snowe of Maine is a pro-choice Republican who Randi says is not running in the fall...so she might actually be a good Republican to try.

She has nothing to lose. Might want to give it a try.

Focus on the people above and spread the word for others to do the same.

12. K&R...and a suggestion...
Some of us are going to try to convince Byrd to change his vote - there may be efforts for Nelson as well that I'm not aware of. I think, until this is over, that we presume that the Dem "yes" votes are cases of misunderstanding, and not "traitorous" and proceed from there.

People can change their minds, but calling them traitors isn't a good way to encourage them to do so, imho. I realize your mileage may differ, and want to add that I make this suggestion not as a criticism of you, but as an idea about how we might get these Senators back in our column. (If we don't, THEN we call them traitors!)
