My Liberal Democratic Mother got caught in the Rovetrap
I was at my mother's watching the Maryland Senate debate on Meet the Press.

She is a Republican-despising diehard Democrat. She can't stand the Republicans, and is very vocal and outspoken about it. She thinks Karl Rove is an evil genius.

But while watching that debate, after one of Michael Steele's snowjob answers, she said: "Even though he's a Republican I'd vote for him."

When I pressed her, she said that Cardin was boring and didn't really say anything. Steel was very articulate and she said he's the type of republican she could vote for.

We got into a big argument about it, as I reminded her that he is just a Trojan Horse who was sent by Karl Rove for that very reason. He looks and talks in a reasonable, bipartisan way, but once he gets into the Senate he'd be just like Bill Frist and the other obvious Republican fascists.

She finally sighed and said: "Well I don't live in Maryland, so it doesn't matter anyway."

What was worrisome is that my mother -- who can't even watch Bush on television without a significant rise in her blood pressure -- can get suckered by the "bipartisan" image of someone like Steele.

1. You Would Think We Would Have Learned...
Well, we have to keep trying. My mother is becoming more conservative it seems too. She like McCain, and always says how "moderate" he is.

I tell her he's a HYPOCRITE and a Sell Out.

2. My mother isn;t becoming more conservative
But she does tend to go by her impression of things.

And since Steele is pretending to be a reasonable Republican, and Cardin is kind of boring, she overlooked the actual implications of both candidates.

8. True, But That's How They Do It...
My mom would say the same thing. When McCain comes out and sounds like a moderate, my mom would say, "he makes sense, I like the way he speaks, he's a good man. Blah, Blah, Blah.

Probably similar to things your mom is saying about Steele. He sounds reasonable, the Dem is boring. Exactly what she says about Schwarznegger & Angiledes. Unfortunately Arnie will win, and get enough of the Dem vote, because of the very reason your mother states. Phil is boring. Arnold is moderate and sounds reasonable. Blah, Blah, Blah.

3. At this stage in the American decent into Hell, no one who is
awake can even consider the old saw of "voting for the person". We have to, at this point, vote for the Party, period. I can not understand how a Democrat could possibly consider voting for any Republican for any office. This is a time for pure Party politics - it's "yellow dog democrats" time. We don't have the luxury of considering anything else...

4. Just remind her that there are many other Pubs that she can't stand,
and if Steel gets elected, that will help the rest keep their majority, and does she really want that????

There are a VERY SMALL number of Pubs I don't necessarily like, but at least respect. Im sorry they will have to suffer a loss along with all their criminal cohorts, but TS! I think a divided gov't helps keep everybody somewhat cleaner, and if there was ever a time when the entire Gov't needed cleaning, it's NOW!

5. I maintain that the emphasis is on advertising another product.
Style over substance. Myriads of marketers and Madison Avenue consultants have spent hours trying to package candidates who will motivate citizens to vote for their guy/gal the way they are motivated to buy one product over another. In essence, you have to get someone aroused to leave their home and drive to the voting booth/store, get them to select the marketer's choice of candidate/product, and then go home with either the absence of voter's/buyer's remorse or feeling pretty good about THEMSELVES for their savy choice.

6. Massachusetts got caught in that trap with Willard 'Mittens' Romney
But we're going to be reversing those years of damage one week from today, by electing Deval Patrick to be the next MA Governor. :)

7. Bernie Sanders summed this up well during an interview one time:
Bernie: "Do you have a wife and kids?"

Interviewer: "Yeah."

Bernie: "You seem like a nice guy, why wouldn't I vote for you?"

9. The best argument for voting for the Democratic candidate is because of
who will Congress, who will set the agendas, who will be in control of the committees, etc. Steele may be articulate, but he is helping Bush even if only indirectly.
