Is GOP "72 hour" GOTV explanation a canard?
I have been hearing lately that the Republicans have a fantastic GOTV effort in the last 72 hours before the elections, presumably as an explanation for why the results have varied so dramatically from the final polls before the past few elections? Is this legit? I think that they are full of it, and that there as been plenty of fraud over the last few elections, which is the real explanation for why the pre-election polls seemed to be off.

2. I heard an interesting comment by Brian Williams this morning -
talking about Karl Rove's internal polling and how optimistic Rove is Republicans will win big and maintain control of Congress. Williams said "Rove polls more than anyone and knows his base better than anyone; it's conceivable he's right and everyone else (other polls) are wrong".

WTF????? :wtf:

9. Well, Rove claims that the general public only sees
weekly polls gauging general public opinion, and not individual polls on senate, house, and gov races. Which is hilarious nonsense.

4. They are very good @ GOTV and micro targeting voters but
.... this is just a cover story. The real work is in fixing the vote.

Rove was head of the John Ashcroft race to be governor of MO. Precincts
that were 90% + African American voted for the first time since the 1950s
for a republican?

Georgia's 2002 results were very funny

Ohio lost more jobs from 2000 to 2004 but the
state went to bush?

Also the last 72 hour GOTV "thing" is something that the media can sell.

Interesting definitions for the word canard....
Define canard:

- an unfounded or false, deliberately misleading story

- a deliberately misleading fabrication

- The French word for "duck."

- The horizontal surface forward of the wing used to control pitch. It's found on very few aircraft. Also the word used to describe aircraft that have a main wing and a horizontal control surface in the nose...also called, "tail first" aircraft.

It seems that everything the republicans do could be termed as canards

5. Been wonder about that as well and I'm somewhat seeing it
in action. I've been hearing alot about their database for microtargeting. We'll see.

But here in DuPage, the local RNC chapter is sending out a mailer to Independents. In the primary, my son and daughter voted only on a referendum. This left them as undeclared for the general. A couple of days ago we received a slick flyer trying to make the case why the Republicans should get their vote. It was address to them as if they are married. LOL!

Hubby and I both voted in the primary as Dems. No mailer for us! *sniff*

So, the RNC sends money (if needed) so they can send these out to everyone who is not a Registered Democrat and theoretically they capture a few percentage points of the Indy vote.

6. Yes, It Is Bullshit
Their GOTV operations consists of somehow getting a whole lot of these so-called "evangelical" voters out to the polls on election day, except there is no evidence that these people actually exist (in the amount that is claimed) in any polling before, during and after the elections. They somehow only appear in the vote totals, but the people themselves are actually invisible.

8. Charlie Cook (I think) called bullshit
He said the 72 hour push amounts to putting millions of fliers on cars in megachurch parking lots the Sunday before election day and that that moves polling their way one to perhaps two percent. Just like everything Rove does, it's all bluster meant to intimidate the opposition.

The polling that's coming out now from all sides shows that the GOP are in an unrecoverable slump and leafletting cars will not be sufficient.

10. Two things about GOP GOTV
One of my friends signed up as a GOP Team Leader. She gets e-mails letting her know how things are going. Last month she got a couple of e-mails asking for help with the effort. More importantly, they told her they needed money.

Another friend (actually my brother's friend) had a GOP GOTV rep show up at a private family function after the funeral of her aunt. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2913525&mesg_id=2913525 He pissed a lot of people off by crashing the post-funeral family get together at the house of the dead relative! He was shown the door and everyone there said they wouldn't be voting for any Republican this cycle.

11. GOTV, databases, profiles, demographics...........
Edited on Tue Oct-31-06 12:45 PM by Historic NY
its all nice to say but with a voting population of 120 million of that 62 million are Rethugs *, you would need hundred of thousands of GOTV people. They have stuff on what they buy, where they shop, what they read, where they go on vacation, etc. In the end only about 35-37% are presently support * and his war. That has got to be the biggest skew in polling numbers for Rove when a good portion of people are just either walking away or not going to vote at all. He can't define that from all his databases. I would even bet some people are just lying when polled too.

*04 election results.

12. That's my first thought
it's a setup for the fraud but on the other hand what else are they supposed to say? We're losing this one big so don't even bother to show up at the polls?
Do the dems have their own pre-election internal polls too? The GOTV efforts by the dems this time is going bigtime, a million union people going door to door in the last days and moveon is doing calls, the largest ever.
