http://www.watchingamerica.com/financialtimesdeutschland000023.shtmlSooner than George W. Bush and most of his advisers expected, what could be the last phase of the implosion of the Iraqi state has begun. Only its duration is in doubt.
It is new that after its recent plan to pacify Baghdad failed, the U.S. military now appears in dissaray. At present there doesn't seem to be a replacement strategy, and these days, the government in Washington is just trying to hang on until the November 7 elections. The strategy of the White House - presenting Iraq as the central front of the war on terror and creating fear of a Democratic takeover of Congress - has failed. Unless the polls are all wrong, in less than two weeks the most incompetent president in American history will face a largely hostile Congress.
INCOMPREHENSIBLE CARELESSNESS
While the leading Western power appears helpless in Iraq and warns of the worst-case scenario of uncontrolled civil war, Congressional committees of inquiry in Washington will soon begin an embittered account of the past five years. The scarcely comprehensible carelessness of Bush and his administration, so far only outlined, will be revealed with the imprimatur of Congress.
