8. First compare this list with the list of Rush advertisers.
Boycott any that match. (Like WELCH'S)

I don't have a problem with companies trying to avoid anything that might be seen as controversial. But if they have one standard for Rush, another for AAR, then f'em.

3. To be honest with you, I'm a bit shocked that REI is listed on this list...
I've been a consumer of REI outdoor products for nearly a decade. No longer.

Looks like I'm changing auto insurance as well.

7. ABC/Disney Doesn't Have Any AAR Affiliates
Also the American Heart Association is a NON PROFIT organization. They do not pay for advertising and many station who do air their announcements do so in leiu of a paying advertiser.

Sorry...two major discrepencies here that question the authenticity of that memo.

16. It's legit
Edited on Tue Oct-31-06 07:32 PM by Fighting Irish
Peter B. Collins was talking about it last Friday on his show. It was sent in anonymously. After working in all facets of the radio industry for three decades or so, I'm sure Collins knows what he's talking about.

Also, ABC does have a sub-network who's sole purpose is the syndication of national advertising spots. A station I used to work at used Westwood One, another big network (now owned by CBS).

Here's how it works: A national advertiser makes just a few ad buys with a syndicator. Instead of going to thousands of local stations making individual buys, they only have to make a few that get sent to affiliates across the country. This makes it much easier for the Oreck vaccuum cleaner guy to get his message out. And much cheaper.

There are a few AAR affiliates that affiliate with ABC Radio for various things, whether it be news breaks or national spots.

I do not doubt the validity of this. Looks to be the real deal.

20. I've Seen Similar Lists For Other Formats
I'm very aware of how network ad buys are done...and I posted in another thread something similar to what you just posted...but that's not how this memo is being portrayed. I've seen "blacklists" against Sports Talk stations and Urban station, but to use this as a reason that AAR or Progressive talk radio is failing is a deception.

If you know advertising then you know that ratings trump all...and a list like this usually cuts both ways. It's to avoid any controversial programming where it may be construed that a company through a bulk network buy is somehow associated with a political agenda.

I listen regularly to the local AAR affiliate and have always paid close attention to the spots...especially the rare local paid ones (tons of trade-outs) as well as those that come down from AAR (most are generic Oreck & PI spots) and the network news that's another slew of generic agency spots. The only affect this may have is on a handful of affiliates that may air ABC News, but it's not a boycott of the AAR.

Again, I reference the American Cancer Society's name on that list as calling up a red flag as it's a non-profit. Also there are many other companies on that list that don't advertise on radio...long jetisoning that medium years ago for television.

If people are interested in supporting Blue companies...they need to actively support their local AAR advertisers or help in promoting other local Progressive radio programs...including the many that are on Public stations that rely on donations rather than advertising to stay on the air. Trying to use this as as a reason for AAR's failures is deceptive.

28. Company policy?
If you advertise during strictly left-wing programming you offend right-wingers and vice versa. Safer for business to stay on middle ground.

Do any of them advertise during strictly right-wing programming?

19. That's sort of interesting
I was watching CNN International Today and they were doing a segment on corporations and which Party they donate to. They said Coke, Pepsi, Apple and CostCo donate almost exclusively to the Democratic Party.
I'm kind of surprised they are on that list.

23. Here's a possiblity... it wasn't the sponsors that ...
.. said "Don't put us on AAR"..

IT WAS ABC RADIO ADVERTISING...

as someone pointed out, ABC Radio ADVERTISING places advertising... what better way to 'kill' a network fighting bankruptcy than to make sure NO ADVERTISING GOES ON THEM.

25. I don't buy it
ABC is in the business of selling advertising. They really only care about making money and promoting Mouse-type stuff that will make them money. They aren't gonna blacklist.

Of course, if advertisers don't want to advertise with a particular format, ABC has no choice but to obey their wishes.

27. Sponsors often decline to advertise on polarizing programming
That would include political talk shows and other controversial programming (Howard Stern, for example).

From what I've observed, Coke seems to prefer younger-skewing music formats. I don't recall them advertising on any talk radio, though I'll be the first to correct myself if that's not the case.
