"I guess Kerry wasn't content blowing 2004, now he wants to blow 2006, too."
From an ABC article:

By the time Kerry got to a microphone in Seattle this afternoon to explain what he called a botched joke about the president, hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Americans, had already heard about this new issue and Republican candidates were talking about it.

"It disgusts me that a bunch of these Republican hacks who have never worn the uniform of our country are willing to lie about those who did," Kerry added.

What's unclear is if Kerry's comments will help rally Republican voters or help their party portray Democrats as against the troops to score victories next Tuesday. A Democratic congressman told ABC News, Tuesday, "I guess Kerry wasn't content blowing 2004, now he wants to blow 2006, too."

25. Then he needs to learn
how to discuss the issue without sounding like a pompous ass.

Lots of other Dems have been on the campaign trail discussing it better - convincing voters to hold Bush accountable and not leaving themselves vulnerable to attacks from the GOP.

Kerry needs to learn a few lessons from his fellow Dems campaigning in 2006. And he owes them a big apology.

32. Wanna supply some examples instead of some broad pronouncements?
Kerry has been very outspoken about this failed Iraq policy for quite some time. Did you read his OP-Ed piece in the NYT? Clearly sets a plan for what course we should take in Iraq. You might change your mind if you read it. Plus, the TV doesn't cover most, if any, of his speeches on this issue. But if you do some research, you'll find all the speeches he's made since 2004 on this issue.

42. His most recent quote is evidence enough
One thoughtless remark, easily taken out of context makes great ammo for GOP'ers to use against Dem candidates.

Most voters don't have time to read through Kerry's op-eds or position statements.

97. It wasn't a thoughtless remark.
It was something taken out of context which you seem to fall in line with.

What a cop out to say that most voters don't have time to read what politicians have to say.

Are you as lazy as them? Read what he has to say and form your opinion from that.

Try not to make such unsubstantiated accusations when you don't even have the facts. You might learn something.

ask Sestak, Murphy, ...

I am not sure where you have been these last few months, but every single Democrat who has tried to speak clear and loud about Iraq has been attacked by the Chickenhawks.

The good thing is they all reacted, just like Kerry did today.

Only a few wimps (like this congressman, if he really exists) have protested.

Edited on Tue Oct-31-06 07:20 PM by OzarkDem
How do Dems running for governor, statewide office, senate, Congress, state assembly, etc. owe anything to John Kerry?

The Dems who are fighting and winning in 2006 have done it on their own, with the help of Dean, the DNC and the 50 state strategy. A few running for Congress are getting helpf from DCCC and DSCC. Kerry may have tossed in a few bucks late in the races, but these folks have been working hard for the last year. They owe their success to hard work, not to John Kerry.

He owes it to them to shut up and let them have the spotlight.

In case you're too busy having your head in the sand Kerry has gone all over the country campaigning for people and raising money for candidates from all sorts of races. And gee I didn't know Kerry no longer had the first amendment. So when did that get taken away from him? Kerry has done more for raising money and helping to campaign for the democrats. He has taken the issue back to Iraq when before it wasn't covered and it was bullshit crap like the anti-gay amendments across the country in the battleground states. Kerry is actually helping democrats by putting the focus back on Iraq because that is the issue where EVERYTHING is at stake. Your fellow country men, our security and our money. But hey I guess you don't give a damn about that and would rather argue about bullshit issues like Rush Limbaugh's comments about Michael J Fox and anti-gay amendments.

39. Given what they attacked Webb and Ford for two days ago, it probably
took the pressure off a few of these people (who are doing quite well on their own, BTW), and the attacks would have come anyway on whoever they could. If you believe otherwise, you should look a little bit around you. (Seeing what I see here in MA in the governor's race, they did not need Kerry to attack our candidate).

It was taken out of context and created as a talking point for all the Repugs to go into attack mode.

Did you hear the audience when he made his remark? They ALL LAUGHED. They knew exactly what he was talking about.

And now it's being taken out of context, which is exactly what they do when they're in trouble. Look how they took Murtha's comments out of context to use against him. Look at Cindy Sheehan, as well. This is what they do.

Stop acting defeatist and applaud Kerry for standing up to this punks.

101. The full quote:
"Education, you know, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

His words weren't taken out of context. You shouldn't have to be a mindreader to "get" a joke and this isn't about nuance. If Kerry's advisors are smart, they'll tell him to apologize and explain there was no intended insult directed towards the troops.

...problably is so uninformed they don't even know if Kerry is a Dem or a Con... I really don't think this is an issue.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with what Kerry said. It's not his fault if a few morons misunderstand him.

45. Since when isn't the media fucking stupid?
In political speech you have to assume that your comments will be twisted and misinterpereted and speak accordingly.

But like I said, I don't think it'll make much of a difference.

How conservative is this "Dem Congressman"

And if he's so proud of his words, why hide his identity. Why not let the reporter quote him directly?

Let's not forget the option that they could be making the whole thing up- like they have done literally thousands of times before.

We're now off message and the country is talking about Kerry,
not Iraq or bush or all the other things we need people to
think about.

I just wish he'd go away. Or shut up.

He really fucked up.

69. Only because the dems did not jump on the occasion to attack Bush.
Kerry did it forcefully this afternoon. Pelosi and Reid have a press release.

Give us a break. We all know some people will decide Kerry is responsible for whatever failure the DSCC and DCCC have made throughout these last months, but do not expect us to take that seriously.

Yesterday, it was about Webb and his novels, the day before about Ford and gay marriage, the day before about Michael J Fox and his video, a few weeks ago about Bill Clinton. All diversion tactics by the GOP, all of which we have been able to avoid.

Do you want me to believe that the Democrats will not be able to avoid this last line of attacks or do some people need an excuse in case they do not succeed as well as they hoped.

What Kerry did was change the subject. Now it is all
about John Kerry when it should be about Iraq and Bush.

80. Dont know - I am truly an outsider and this outsider thinks that
the Democrats should react quickly. This is what the GOP would do. They would be out attacking.

The Democrats are not. That is all I am saying.

Even if he had not botched a line, Kerry would have said exactly what I say to my sons everyday, so do not expect me to be offended by that. Time to react or we are wuss.

Not only are we wasting our own precious time and resources, we are feeding the GOP all the doubt it needs to publish more fake poll numbers closing the gaps in tight races, which lead to...

DIEBOLD-ED ELECTIONS.

I'm so embarrassed to be a democrat right now. When will we ever learn?

Uh-uh..... If you seriously think he did wrong today, you belong to a different agenda than I and most other Democrats. When our people stand up for what is right, you don't turn on them like this.... no FUCKING way! Righteousness as was displayed today is not something to shy away from right before an election. If that is your way of winning, we don't need you!
