They've Got The Votes For Cloture
Assuming that all the repubs vote for cloture, (and they will) they also have Johnson, Byrd, Nelson, Salazar and Landrieu. The former are voting for Alito, Salazar has said he'll vote against Alito, but for cloture. Landrieu has also gone on record as stating that she'll vote for cloture. That's enough. I don't understand how Kerry can filibuster.

In other words, it's over.

1. And if we threw up our hands and admitted defeat
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 06:10 PM by kgfnally
like all you defeatists want us to do, it REALLY WOULD be over.

But that's what defeatism's all about, right?

Thought so.

10. Right, everyone who either disagrees
with the majority, or perceives things differently are Vichy style traitors. And yes, that's precisely what's being said. I called, e-mailed and wrote LTTE. I took action when it was time to take action. Now it's time to let go. Everything's been done that can be done. It's simple math, you know.

2. bull, we can get them to abstain from voting for cloture
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 06:09 PM by jsamuel
many of them said they don't want to filibuster, but if they "abstain from filibustering" they will not give the Repubs the 60 votes they need to stop the filibuster.

12. Could you be any less perceptive.
I'm not bitching. I'm not that disappointed in the dems re filibuster because I didn't expect much. I did expect them to make their case during the hearings. They did an awful job. That I'll bitch about. You want to see bitching? There's plenty of it at DU, but it's not there in my OP, and that's apparent with any reasonable reading of it.

31. What are you talking about?
You've got the wrong poster. And if you still think so, prove it. I'm sure that like every other poster
I've done some griping, but that's simply not largely what I write about. I rarely bitch and moan about democrats.

17. Just as I posted
Landrieu, Salazar and Nelson have gone or record that they will vote for cloture, regardless of how they are voting regarding confirmation. I believe Johnson has also stated he'd vote for cloture. I haven't heard whether Byrd supports cloture.

Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 06:29 PM by jsamuel
being technical) That does not mean that they will vote FOR cloture because they could "abstain from filibustering"

I am giving them a way out of this.

11. You know, if Kerry - who isn't even in the country - hasn't given up...
... and has been calling fellow Dem Senators back in the US all afternoon, perhaps we should give him the benefit of the doubt, and try calling our Senators before giving up?

Just a thought...

I don't think George Washington started to back off. Ever. I don't think any founding father did.

Samuel Alito gets on that court and my generation is fucked, fucked, fucked, fucked, fucked.

Sorry, but I'll go down fighting, if it must go that way.

not think there you HUGE things happening behind the scenes right now that we aren't aware of? I highly doubt Kerry would have thrown his careful self on the pyre if he and Reid didn't have some sort of plan. I think your post is way way to simplistic.

On edit.

If they were going to filibuster anything they needed to filibuster this. At least they are taking a stand and while I'm not a huge Kerry fan he has my respect here.

30. I'm sure there's a great deal happening
behind the scenes, but I can count. Really, it's that simple. And how is Kerry throwing himself on any pyre? The base loves him for this. He loses very little for stating that he wants to filibuster.
