WASHINGTON (Reuters) - While the vote count in the battle for the U.S. Congress could stretch deep into the night on November 7, some of the earliest returns could offer big clues about the ultimate outcome.
Democrats hope to win early and often in crucial House of Representatives races in the Northeast and Midwest, where polls are the first to close and more than two dozen Republican incumbents are fighting for their political lives.
Democrats must gain 15 House seats and six Senate seats to seize power in each chamber. All 435 House seats and 33 of 100 Senate seats are at stake on Tuesday.
The results in early closing House battlegrounds in Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Hampshire could be an early barometer of whether Democrats will sweep Republicans out of power in the House and how big the winning margin would be.
