But regardless -- isn't it interesting how dems are always treated as if they are doing something only for politics?

Why not why did * nomintate him in the first place? Was there politics there? I guess not.

Conviction? Could mean his personal conviction that Alito should not be appointed.

Politics? Could mean it's strictly a political move -- OR could mean his sense of 'good politics' in this area lead him to believe that Alito should not be appointed for the good of the country.
