I am a minor. I am still in high school, and I cannot vote. My generation has enough fall-out from this shithead excuse for an administration to deal with. Do not let Samuel Alito sit on that court. Do not let him rule for the rest of his life. Do not let him roll back one single right of mine. DON'T. If I can contact my senators, so can you.

Get on the phone. Get the e-mails out.

Don't tell me to save for tomorrow. For all you know, tomorrow--or some other time in the very near future--we could all be sitting in jail. Every last one of us.

Today is now. Today is the power. WE are the people. WE are the Americans.

Don't make my generation sit in a cesspool, a country ruined by ignorance, fear, and hate.

74. I'm with "Just Me" on not being attached to outcomes. This is the state

of mind that can and will get our country back. If you get too "attached" to the outcome of individual battles, then you become vulnerable to the main strategy in this fascist junta, which is to make the great progressive American majority feel like a minority. We are NOT a minority, not by a long shot. But we HAVE been disempowered, and, above all, DISENFRANCHISED.

Bear that in mind, always. The numbers in Congress are NOT representative of the majority.

We are in the midst of American Revolution II--the recovery of our right to vote, the peaceful overthrow of a fascist junta, and the establishment of a BETTER country. But revolutions are not easy, and they do not happen overnight. They happen in fits and starts, over long periods of time. We must be steadfast and clearly focused. Think of Nelson Mandela, 30 years in prison until apartheid was overthrown, and he emerged from jail to become South Africa's first black president.

I'm not saying this is going to take 30 years. I don't think it is. I'm just saying we need to keep perspective, and understand that this IS a revolution, and it WILL suffer defeats before it ultimately succeeds.

And now I want to say something particularly to the young, and to WritingIsMyReligion. I'm old. My first vote for president was in 1964. I've seen a lot. And I know that, 1) the CURRENT revolution, that is boiling beneath the surface in this country, started in the 1960s, in MY generation's rejection of unjust war and embracing of our pluralistic society, equal rights for all, protection of our planetary environment, and many other great advancements in human understanding; and 2) we nevertheless failed this generation and future generations by not solving the problem of the aggressive war machine on which our economy is based, and that remained fully in place as a temptation to fascists like the Bushites and their war profiteering friends.

We toppled two presidents--LBJ and Nixon. We probably prevented Vietnam from getting nuked--although we could not prevent upwards of two million Vietnamese and Southeast Asians from getting slaughtered by our war machine, along with the loss of over 55,000 U.S. soldiers. We suffered the horrid trauma of assassination after assassination of our best leaders--JFK, MLK, RFK, all in the space of five years. We furthermore underwent an astonishing heightening of consciousness on civil rights and the environment. Maybe we had some right to be exhausted at the end of all of that. But we should not have relented. We should have dismantled the US offensive war machine then and there, or should have done our damnedest to to cut it back, and to make the point that such a war machine has only one purpose: to manufacture unjust war in order to perpetuate itself.

This is the problem at the heart of everything. U.S.-based global corporate war profiteers. And in order to PREVENT the peace-loving American majority from having a say in their latest manufactured war, in Iraq, they took over our election system with Bushite corporations now controlling the tabulation of our votes using 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, with virtually no audit/recount controls.

58% of the American people opposed this war way back in Feb. '03, before the invasion. 58%! Across the board in all polls. But we were not listened to, and there was never any intention of listening to us. The intention was to disenfranchise us, and that's what they've done. It's just as clear as it could be.

Now we--all of us--have to fight to restore our right to vote. That's MY prescription. Transparent elections = peace.

I fully support battles like this--against the Alito nomination--but we need to realize the TRUE REASON why it is so hard. Our vote is the mechanism of our sovereignty as a people. Without transparent elections--i.e., without the right to vote in a meaningful election, where all the vote are counted in sight of the public--we are stripped of our sovereignty. We are little better than serfs and slaves, who have no say in what happens. The reason it's so hard is that we have little power left to determine who our representatives are. And we MUST change this. We MUST throw these election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor'!

WritingIsMyReligion, my profound apologies from my generation to yours, for our failure to see our revolution through to its proper conclusion--dismantling of our offensive war capability. We also failed on corporate rule--a related subject that I won't go into here. But, as I said, revolutions occur in fits and starts. History shows this overwhelmingly. It's never a smooth ride. We started a revolution back there in the '60s. And it may well be that the ferocity of this Bush junta is a measure of our accomplishments. We planted the seeds of peace and justice. We scared the shit out of them with our motto, "Make love, not war!" Now let's finish that revolution, and together create the better country that we know we are capable of creating.

i've been working my butt off on the phone & fax machine (i'm beginning to dread the upcoming phone bill)

but i keep at it--obsessively--for myself, my daughter, her friends, everyone i know and don't know, even for the people who want alito on the court--i know that the majority of them just don't realize how dangerous things could get. (so many of them are blind faith bush sheep/followers--they don't understand what the "unitary executive theory" entails.

my daughter got on the phone and called our two senators--she called last night and left messages--she told them she was only seventeen. i helped her write a short statement that she could read. she practiced it several times and had it memorized.

i think you should write a short paragraph or two and make the call. (don't talk too slow, you'll get cut off by an answering machine) tell them how old you are. tell them you can't vote yet--but you will be able to vote soon enough. and they're talking about YOUR future too.

if their mailboxes are full you can look up their numbers at their state offices and call there (if whoever pays your phone bill says ok). or write out a letter and go fax it--it's around $1.50 at a store.

tell your friends--do this together. make a petition and put your names and zip codes on it. then fax it.

but do it quick. monday at 4:30 eastern time they vote for cloture. if there are sixty votes for cloture then we can't filibuster and it's over.

i'm planning on having my seventeen year old stay home from school to watch cspan. this is a major event in her life--and i want her to see how it all gets played out.

we've got a lot of people in our corner, and everybody is doing the best they can. now it's the senator's turn.

we're half way there--a filibuster only needs one person. so far we've got thirteen. the trick is to not get the 60 cloture votes. you have two republican senators (i checked your profile) so if they don't want to join the filibuster that's okay. all they have to do is NOT VOTE FOR CLOTURE. susan collins said she wouldn't go along with a filibuster so she needs to either stay home or vote no on cloture. olympia snowe won't be running again so she won't care if you'll ever vote republican or not. but she's a good lady from what i understand--so hopefully she'll do the right thing. she shouldn't cave in to republicans because she doesn't have anything to lose.

if you do fax a letter or petition i'd get it in before sunday night. come monday all the fax and phone lines will be jammed (i imagine)
