If Bryd steps down or is defeated in a primary, a Republican will likely take his seat.

West Virginia is turning redder every election cycle - just like many rural states. Do you not understand this? West Virginians are largely religious, conservative folks. Are you not aware of the fact that DU is not representative of the American public. This is a pretty left of center forum. The American people are not anywhere even close to as left of center as the population of this forum.

Byrd has gone directly after Bush over and over again. Very often, I am sure, against the polls in his own state. Byrd is going to vote for Alito. We may not agree with it, but we don't cast him overboard because he doesn't vote with us all the time.
