What Kerry should have said
This would have appeared apologetic and strong:

"I deeply apologize for my ill-worded remarks which especially offended American servicemen and women. I regard any American's decision to join the US military to be one based on bravery and intelligence of the highest caliber. By no means did I mean to imply members of the military are uneducated. My words were meant as a comment on the failed policies in Iraq, no more, no less."

AND THAT'S FUCKING IT! This would have ended the gaffe as a non-story.

Kerry steps off campaign trail
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/01/kerry.remarks/index.html
Sen. John Kerry is heading back to Washington and away from tight congressional races after igniting a firestorm of GOP criticism with a "botched joke" about bad students getting stuck in Iraq. He canceled plans to campaign for fellow Democrats today and one party official said: "I would be surprised if you see him welcomed out there anywhere and certainly not in a race that is meaningful."

Kerry apologizes for 'a botched joke'
AP - 18 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Sen. John Kerry apologized for "a botched joke" about President Bush's Iraq policies that led Bush and fellow Republicans to accuse him of insulting U.S. troops. Even some Democrats assailed Kerry, who had some campaign appearances scratched Wednesday.

10. hey look, Kerry just said issued a statement similar to my suggestion
maybe he's reading my posts

http://blog.johnkerry.com/2006/11/a_statement_from_john_kerry.html

As a combat veteran, I want to make it clear to anyone in uniform and to their loved ones: my poorly stated joke at a rally was not about, and never intended to refer to any troop.

I sincerely regret that my words were misinterpreted to wrongly imply anything negative about those in uniform, and I personally apologize to any service member, family member, or American who was offended.

It is clear the Republican Party would rather talk about anything but their failed security policy. I don’t want my verbal slip to be a diversion from the real issues. I will continue to fight for a change of course to provide real security for our country, and a winning strategy for our troops.

8. the OP author has been busy today
what is this, like the 100th anti-Kerry post today alone?

I just don't understand why anyone would want to weigh in over and over and over on the same subject, saying essentially the same thing. We know how you feel...no need to start more threads about it.

Kerry once again displayed terrible judgement, but this time it could cost control of Congress. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. So yeah, I'm just a little pissed and agitated. There are plenty of other DUers who feel the same way. I don't feel like being silenced.

And I don't know where you were taught math, but this is somewhere around my 25th post on the subject today.

13. Why keep the story alive?
The funny thing is that what Kerry actually did is meaningless; it shouldn't affect anything at all. The media is at fault for reporting it as if Kerry had in fact meant to insult the troops, even though they knew better. You aren't helping matters any by starting yet another thread on the topic. It's a NON-STORY. Let it go.
