HBO Vetoes Diebold's Docu Request

HBO rejected a call by Diebold Election Systems to pull the documentary "Hacking Democracy" from its schedule or air company disclaimers questioning the accuracy of film.

In a letter to HBO chairman and CEO Chris Albrecht, Diebold seeks to have 30-second disclaimers before, after and during the docu that is critical of the computerized election systems that are used in most precincts nationwide. The film is scheduled to air Thursday.

HBO spokesman Jeff Cusson said the company "stands by our film and has no intention of withdrawing the film from its schedule."

Diebold contends that previews of the docu contains serious "material errors" that make the film inaccurate.

The vote tabulating method is not a defense secret. The public has the right to know how its votes are counted. Keeping it a secret undermines democracy.

...problem is, Diebold entered the election systems business in 2001 when they purchased Global Election Systems, which had been in the business since 1991.

the one they're airing tomorrow night. Diebold is complaining about a different documentary altogether, the one released in the U.K. Leave it to Diebold to screw THAT up as well. The company that can't do anything correctly, except guarantee Republicans victories, that is. :eyes:

27. LOL - like Diebold has a right to expect quality control or integrity from others.
Diebold's used to getting what it wants from our government without too many questions. I'm sure they're not familiar with anything getting out of their hands.

I await the day when there's a citizens' lawsuit against Diebold for disenfranchisement.

I don't PAY for HBO for disclaimers. Either it is accurate or not. If it is accurate, run it.

If Diebold objects, there are remedies for that too.

HBO isn't CBS.

HBO has been doing tremendous work in its own programming, stuff you can't see anywhere else. The NERVE of Diebold to demand this shit. Kick their asses, HBO. I'll be watching tomorrow along with millions of others. You rock...and you might consider allowing a second showing to be free for cable and sat subscribers who don't get HBO. They did a free weekend last week; another free weekend just before the elections would be incredible and very, very patriotic.

21. Now THIS is hilarious...
Diebold also writes that the film is "directed by the directors of 'VoterGate' and contains much of the same material. 'VoterGate' was produced with special thanks to Susan Sarandon and the Streisand Foundation."

First of all dummies, it is NOT directed by the same directors:

IMDb also lists "VoterGate" as "Hacking Democracy's" working title in the U.K.

The original "VoterGate" is a different movie, different directors. Diebold is obviously confused. Or being misleading (imagine that).

But Diebold's implication that "produced with special thanks to Susan Sarandon and the Streisand Foundation" automatically renders it suspect, is just, well, laughable.

So Diebold, here's a big  for you, and your idiot lawyers, and your lame attempt to muzzle free speech.

victory, and for installing illegal software in its machines in California and lying
about it. Not to mention attempting to bribe election officials in Ohio with

39. "It appears the film Diebold is responding to is not the film HBO is airing,"
Seems they used their machines to decide which film to whine about.

But more importantly:

Diebold also writes that the film is "directed by the directors of 'VoterGate' and contains much of the same material. 'VoterGate' was produced with special thanks to Susan Sarandon and the Streisand Foundation."

Oh? Is this not a complaint that could only come from a Republican Company ?!?

54. Computerworld e-voting package
Computerworld does a great job on e-voting this week.

E-voting state by state: What you need to know

Angela Gunn

November 01, 2006 (Computerworld) -- Many Americans will head to the polls for November's midterm elections with less certainty than ever about how -- or whether -- their votes will be counted.

Two years after the controversy-plagued 2004 elections, four years after HAVA (the Help America Vote Act) was passed, and six years after the Supreme Court and America romanced the hanging chad, experts are bracing for yet another wave of challenges to regional vote-counting systems.

One-third of us will use voting machines that have never before served in a general election. Legal challenges to paperless DRE (direct-recording electronic) voting technologies are proliferating across the country, and as computer scientists demonstrated earlier this year, hacking challenges to many of these machines can bear fruit even faster than demands for recounts.

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss..............Go HBO, GO. Don't cave in to these monsters among us. The entertainment industry has felt the strong arm of corprate control for years now. HBO has been one of the bright spots on the media landscape, were real film art can be created. And free speach can be expressed. The lockdown mentality of the corporate masters is keeping this voting machine issue off most of the media, keeping many in the dark on this most important topic. I have devoted cartoons to this topic myself, here's one to look at,
