ADVANTAGE MENENDEZ (D) IN NJ

Polls: Menendez Leads Kean in N.J. Race

Democrat Robert Menendez holds a slight edge over Republican challenger Tom Kean Jr. in New Jersey's Senate race in one poll and a larger lead in another survey, results released on Tuesday showed.

In the Quinnipiac University poll, Menendez holds a 49-44 percent advantage among 887 likely voters questioned from Oct. 23-29. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.


In a CNN poll, conducted from Oct. 26-29 by Opinion Research Corp., Menendez had a 51-44 percent lead among 577 likely voters surveyed. The error margin was plus or minus 4 percentage points. Among 917 registered voters, Menendez was preferred 50-38 percent. KLOBUCHAR (D) WIDENS LEAD IN MN


In the U.S. Senate race, the SCSU poll showed Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar with her widest lead yet over Kennedy.

Klobuchar had support from about 56 percent of likely voters, compared to 31 percent for Kennedy. Those numbers, too, include both definite and leaning supporters. Independence Party candidate Robert Fitzgerald had 3 percent.

Another statewide poll by the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute, released Wednesday, had Klobuchar leading by 22 percentage points, 55 percent to 33 percent. ADVANTAGE WEBB (D) IN VA

RICHMOND, Va. - Democr, , ) with a week to go in a key race that could determine control of the Senate, according to a poll released Tuesday.

Among likely voters surveyed, 50 percent favored Webb, a former Republican who served as Navy secretary in the Reagan administration, while 46 percent favored Allen, and 4 percent were undecided.

Among a larger sample of 904 registered Virginia voters, the result was about even, with 48 percent backing Webb, 46 percent for Allen and 5 percent undecided. Independent Gail Parker also is on the ballot.
