Kerry's '72 Army comments mirror latest
By JOHN SOLOMON, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - During a Vietnam-era run for Congress three decades ago, John Kerry said he opposed a volunteer Army because it would be dominated by the underprivileged, be less accountable and be more prone to "the perpetuation of war crimes."

Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran who turned against the war, made the observations in answers to a 1972 candidate questionnaire from a Massachusetts peace group.

...

Kerry filled out the candidate questionnaire at the request of Massachusetts Political Action for Peace, an anti-war group that decades later turned over its historical documents to university researchers.

AP obtained the document from someone who gathered it from archives during Kerry's unsuccessful 2004 presidential campaign against President Bush. Republicans in that election relentlessly assailed Kerry's role in the anti-war movement decades earlier.

2. Isn't that parallel to something Bush Sr has said? Isn't there a
General who has also said this - similarly?

By the way, what is the official DOD study results. It makes sense that they have studied this. I believe they have implied that drafting is not the ideal way to go.

3. Pretty clear this is Swiftboat v 2.0 - designed to inflame the Repub base!
The ones who were gonna sit out this time. Now being inflammed against that evil John Kerry, who as so many have pointed out isn't running for anything.

Pure distraction from how horribly the republicans have managed everything.

No doubt the source of this story was Karl's fax machine.

8. I agree with Kerry's 1972 remarks 100%
I also oppose a 'volunteer' Army because it's dominated by the underprivileged, is less accountable and is more prone to the perpetuation of war crimes. There's no fucking question about it.

At an absolute minimum, I support a comprehensive Draft - male, female, gay, straight - by lottery. Far, far preferable (imho) is Universal National Service that includes options like the Peace Corps, VISTA, AmeriCorps, and the Public Health Service.
