Which empire would you choose to live in?
Choose being a funny word, since you usually end up inside an empire whether you want to or not.

But anyway...

If you had a choice between any empire that has been built up, then collapsed over time, which would you choose to live in?

Not saying you can't pick to be a barbarian or a savage. Like I said, you'll end up an imperial cog either way, but you can still pick this option.

1. Roman, but only if I could be a patrician
If not, then the Macedonian empire would be pretty good too.

5. Chinese empire
Though I guess it would suck to be a woman there. I actually can't think of one historic empire where it didn't suck to be a woman. OK - British empire, 19th century.

8. Indus Civilization--pre-Aryan
Plumbing, sewers, most people with money, social equality, and very little warfare. Oh yeah, perfect.

10. Egyptian
Women had considerable rights under the law, property, divorce, etc. There was an ethic of justice and decency to the poor. It's doubtful they were any better at living up to their ideals than anyone else but hey, they tried.

The necessities of life were readily available and unless the Nile failed to rise for several years in a row, people didn't starve. Of course instead of paying your taxes you might get called on to help build a pyramid but even there the pyramid builders got paid for their work and if they keeled over on the job they got the honor of being buried near the king where otherwise only the rich and famous could hope to enjoy their eternal rest.

Being in the upper classes would have been best of course but life for the poor was better than in less stable countries where you were at the mercy of warring armies.

Rome could be fun too--sort of like living in New York--but I'm not a fan of violent sports so gladiatorial games would have been a bummer.
