Bill Clinton!Over 1,000 show up to see Clinton at S.F. eventArticle Last Updated:11/02/2006
SAN FRANCISCO — The campaign for and against Proposition 87, the oil-drilling tax measure on next week's ballot, is much like the debate now playing out across the nation, former President Bill Clinton said Wednesday.
"One side says 'stay the course' and the other says 'we can do better,'" he told a cheering crowd of more than 1,000 people who waited in Civic Center Plaza for an hour and 45 minutes past the event's scheduled start time for his late arrival.
Proposition 87 would tax oil companies for oil they take from California, raising about $4 billion for use in developing alternative energy sources with a goal of reducing the state's dependence on gas and diesel by 25 percent within 10 years.
Clinton was introduced Wednesday by actress Eva Longoria ("Desperate Housewives"), who said Clinton "knows a little about leadership" and "has devoted his life to making our lives better."
Earlier, singers Stephen Jenkins (Third Eye Blind) and Bonnie Raitt had performed brief sets and spoke in favor of the measure. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and District Attorney Kamala Harris spoke also.
Clinton went from the Proposition 87 rally to San Francisco's Warfield theater for a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee fundraiser, where he was joined by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Angelides.
