The ultimate "we will lose thread". All defeatists please post here.
This way, there will be only ONE such thread in GD, not twenty of them. If you think we are going to lose post here and leave the rest of GD alone. Thank you.

9. Kerry lost it for us
Sure, the machines were going to steal it, but now they don't have to because Kerry opened his big mouth. All the fundy nut jobs are going to come out to boot Kerry from the Senate and replace him with Robert Bork. Then, the radio will only be allowed to play Toby Keith and Sara Evans will win all the reality shows, including Big Brother.

Oh, and AAR sucks!

13. a possible antidote for such rampant defeatism. . .
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 12:51 PM by stellanoir
Repeat after me. . .

". . .Perhaps by saying something like this. . .

Every time you feel the intense sorrow about anticipating the sometimes seemingly inevitable defeat, consider stiffening your spine, focusing your mind and saying aloud or thinking really loudly and firmly. . .

"I'm co creating with spirit that any malicious code implanted or secreted in the vote tally counting software be neutralized in the upcoming elections, and any malfeasance that does occur be so blatant that it will be exposed and corrected immedietely, so that the true will of the electorate will be revealed and true justice can be restored." (feel free to modify as you feel is appropriate)

Very simply, if they can rig 'em maybe we can fix 'em. . .with our hearts and minds. . . "

You see if there is one thing the other side is masterful at, it is "group think." Their "group think" is more often than not based on falsehood. A rational approach from some of the greatest intellects of our nation and their refutes based on scientific, mathematical, and historical data, has all too often fallen flat and simply not worked.

Perhaps it's high time to fight irrationality with faith based "group think" based on the belief that truth will win out over time.

As exemplified by the "Kerry flame wars" of yesterday, this is clearly an arena where we are lacking and we could perhaps work on developing some collective cerebral focus.

"Just imagine if you will. . ."

If there is any aspect of technology that could be influenced by group consciousness, it would probably be computers. If you don't believe me then ask a techie or two about inexplicable anomalies.

I figure it's worth a shot, certainly can't hurt, and is something we all can do.

22. Those who dis the folks who are worried about Bushite corporations
"counting" all our votes behind a veil of corporate secrecy, who are upset with our Democratic leadership for allowing this to happen, and who don't understand some Democratic leaders having voted for the war, supporting the war with massive funding, and/or waffling on the war, when 56% of the American people opposed the war way back in Feb. '03, before the invasion, and 70% opposed to it today--people who dis these kinds of worries are much like Bush and Bushites...

...if you criticize the war, you're with the "terrorists."

Re: this "defeatist" thread--if you blame Dems for permitting Bushites to "count" all the votes under a veil of corporate secrecy, leaving our elections wide open to fraud, or if you criticize Dem candidates for NOT representing the majority on the war and other issues, that means you WANT the Dems to lose and Bushites to win.

That's the Bush view of things: criticism, concern, facts, reality, truth = DISLOYALTY.

I thought DU was an open forum for free discussion of Democratic issues, not a rah-rah campaign rally to worship our Great Leaders.

Threads like this say otherwise. Survivor999 seems to be saying: SHUT UP AND SALUTE THE DEM FLAG!

The truth about the election system is that it was taken over, during the 2002-2004 period, by electronic voting corporations with very close ties to the Bush Junta and to far rightwing causes. And they are "counting" all the votes with TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code, with virtually no audit/recount controls. Our Dem Party leadership is in part responsible for this fascist coup--by their MIND-BOGGLING silence as it took place--and their CONTINUED silence and acquiescence to SECRET, CORPORATE vote counting.

And this is very worrisome, indeed. Our election system is WIDE OPEN to massive fraud--via voting machines and central tabulators that are extremely insecure and insider hackable, in which the SECRET coding is owned and controlled by Bushite corporations.

Many states/counties have no paper trail at all. These votes cannot even be recounted or audited. Many states have NO audit. Others--the best--have only a 1% audit (wholly inadequate in this secret, high speed environment). And even in states that have some sort of paper trail, recounts are extremely expensive, difficult to obtain, and rare.

So, where are the "checks and balances" on election fraud? THEY DO NOT EXIST. Plain and simple. We are dependent on the honesty of the people at Diebold, whose CEO, until recently, was a Bush/Cheney campaign chair and major fundraiser, and the people at ES&S (a spinoff of Diebold), which was funded by rightwing billionaire Howard Ahmanson, who also gave one million dollars to the extremist 'christian' Chalcedon Foundation (which touts the death penalty for homosexuals, among other things).

Worried? What, me worry?!

To be worried about this is DEFEATIST??!!

On the contrary, to NOT be worried about this is to be BLIND, and to NOT warn people about it is WRONG. What on earth are people going to do, if they wake up on Nov. 8 to another Bush "pod people" Congress?

It CAN happen. Nobody knows if it will. Maybe they'll lay back, with their election theft capability, this time--in order to preserve it for future purposes. However, the corporate news monopolies jumping all over Kerry's stray joke gives me trepidations about it, as if they were just looking for some misstep like that to hang another Stolen Election on. Oh, yeah, all the voters changed their minds--a 15% to 20% shift--because Kerry blew a line. Right.

Well, we've seen it before, haven't we? (Dean's "scream" comes to mind. And all those phony "terra" alerts in the weeks before the '04 election. And Rove attributing their "win" to the Republicans' "invisible" get-out-the-vote campaign "in the churches.") (We heard that one again, recently, from Cheney.)

Another possibility--that these Bushite e-voting corporations are fully capable of pulling off: A slim Dem majority in the House, padded with Bushite Dems (like those who voted for torture and the suspension of habeas corpus the other week)--to shut us all up and dampen the election reform movement--but it will be a House in which people like Waxman and Conyers will be greatly handicapped.

This COULD happen. It CAN be engineered. Easily! These Bushite corporations ALSO control vote "counting" in our Dem primary elections. How do we know they haven't already used their TRADE SECRET vote "counting" software to pick more pro-war, pro-corporate Dems? It's not just corporate money now, influencing our elections. They have DIRECT invisible control over the vote "counting."

We MUST be aware of this--and fight it, as well as we can, with overwhelming turnouts, with vigilant election monitoring, with challenges of suspicious results, with pressure on our OWN Party, and with on-going, long term election reform activism.

Doom and gloom? No, this is the reality. These are the REAL facts about our election system. And we need to face them, and be prepared for whatever happens. And we also need to know that one thing that is NOT going to happen is CERTAINTY: transparent, verifiable election results.

That IS the problem. It's why anybody could be worried, at this point, that the Dems could lose.

47. Great post!
It's not about being defeatist, but about being realistic about what we are up against. I think - if the election is fair and on the level - we have an excellent chance of tipping the balance in our favor.

However, I just don't trust the GOP and the corporate powers that are in their pockets. And if we do win fair and sqaure, I don't trust that there isn't going to be some major backlash. The possibilty of GWB getting in a few "fuck yous" before he leaves office are highly likely.

Here is my tinfoil hat idea of what might happen: We win pretty big, and within the next few months there is a major terror attack, or some major economic disaster, or some combination of horrible happenings, which they will find some way to pin on the Democrats and Clinton's Penis, therefore killing our chances in the presidental election in 2008. :tinfoilhat:

Call me cynical, but I just don't believe that the republicans are going to be good sports and shake our hands should we be victorious. They are too evil, vindictive and hell bent on their mission to destroy the lives of all but the very, very elite.

Plan A is our priorities if we take at least the House, given a high enough turnout and enough success on the part of election integrity activists.

For me Plan B is don't concede ANYTHING without a fight to the bitter end.
