OAXACA: Feds Now Attacking University Radio Station, Shooting reported
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 12:31 PM by Wiley50
The University radio is the only mass comunication medium left for the APPO people's movement.
The University's regents had declared that the university was autonomous and forbade the
feds from entering the university. Last night, the Mexican Federal Preventive Police (PFP)
and the Mexican FBI began surrounding the university on the pretext that they had information that weapons were stored there. The radio says that the only thing they have are firecrackers. The radio station requested the people to come and protect them. This morning the seige has begun.

If you are interested, please keep abreast of this developing situation at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oaxacastudyactiongroup/

At 8:15 this morning, Nancy Davies, reporter for NarcoNews.com and resident of Oaxaca
posted the following on the Yahoo group site:

8:15
As best I can tell, the PFP is attacking Radio Universidad in Cicno Señores and capturing people off the street. They are shooting. Radio is boradcasting an appeal for help

At 10:50 she posts this update:

At 8:15 the PFP were grabbing people. Among them are three minor boys, in the company of one man aged 22. Tear gas was shot off, at the crucera de Cinco Señores. The radio called people to come to their defense.

In belief that they were soon to be arrested (or worse) the radio announcers repeated the time and place of meetings, especially tomorrow AM at 11:00 for a massive march. University students are gathering at Radio Universidad.

People are urged not to provoke incident with PFP.
Vehicles gathered on all sides at (9:50 they were thought to be entering but that did not happen. People gathered, some being beaten. The recorr spoke twice by phone, urging the people to stat strong, and ended his call "hasta la victoria siempre".

Two phone calls of support have come from Canada. the Poeple are advised to step back from the PFP

at 10:45 those reporters and video filmers are kidnapped and apparently are being taken to airport.

The PFP may be backed up by military -? Certainly they are infiltrated with PRI in plain clothes police and porros both. The crowd is building barricades and fortifying the side streets and shouting at the PFP.

It looks to me like the face-off either could last for a while or explode at any moment --depends on the number of people who show up. The police aare using tear gas on the crowd again.

Not that I want to distract people from the elections but it comes to mind that our elections might be the reason this is occuring now. Please contact Keith Obermann and others and ask them to cover this in a non-biased fashion-

6. Attack on Streaming Internet NEW UPDATE
The war is on in Oaxaca. It began at 8:00 AM with the gathering of the PFP and an inflitartion of porros and state police in plain clothes. There are 5,000 PFP and many people if they're out there. The Rector of the universidad has called for unity and deonounced the federal gov. It is an autonomous community. The radio is calling for pacific resistance but since the feds are using tear gas the poeple are pissed off and the report is that they are starting to use rocks and sticks.Several people have been arrested and wounded, including three children. A helicopter is there and presumably may airlift people to the airport for getting them into custody.

The barricades are up in Cinco Señores and the area surrounding University City. Most of the barricades are cars and barbed wire.

Also calling for barricades at Santo Domingo where the APPO is camped.

OSAG--Anyone with info please post to the group not to me personally.

This morning, Amy Goodman reported the the killers of Brad Will are "missing" and not in custody as reported by the whore media.

The local mayor continues to allege that these men were attacked and shot in self defense -- even though the only weapon in Brad Will's hands was his camera.

PLEASE EMAIL THE COMMITTEE TO PROTECT JOURNALISTS AND ASK THEM TO TAKE ACTION:

There's also Narco News but they are usually 24-48 hours after the fact

I don't speak spanish so the University radio streaming internet does me no good
and, according to Nancy, their stream has been cut now.

16. NOON UPDATE FROM NANCY DAVIES
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 01:29 PM by Wiley50
attack

At noon it looks like the troops are landing helicopters on university property to invade the station. Invading an autonous university is a huge mistake on the part of Fox -

people are gathered and resisitng with paint (throwing it on the armored cars), nails on the tires, gasoline (that sounds like fires). The military may be reinforcing, that's what they're saying but not verified --human rights observers, anybody with a camera or video should go, people are wounded and are being arrested.

tear gas is all over Cinco Señores and the residents are taking to the streets. Tear gas was used durting the morning also. Sorriano area at Plaza del Valle is under attack, apparently there's a UABJO building there in the vicinity.

Call is out for everyone to resist.

also asking people to up the volume of those listening in, because the

PFP has called in reinforcements, two more helicopters. They can feel

split PFP forces. Bring rockets (cohetes) with long fuse, glass
bottles. water with vinegar. Water trucks and cannons are coming back
after refilling, so people surrounding the PFP, should allow a path
for them to retreat, otherwise the water cannons may open fire to save
the PFP.

32. UPDATE MILITARY BACKING UP PFP WITH HEAVY WEAPONS
attack

David, a porro is a thug, hired by the PRI in this case to do harm.

This is as bad as we could imagine. The APPO people in the Santo Domingo area are moblizing. The military is backing the PFP with heavy weapons. The gas attacks are everywhere. Children have been injured and according to reports, abducted by helicopters. The first report, probably more accurate, is that arrested people get loaded into helicopters to be taken to the airport, that was the case yesterday. Especially people with videos and cameras get grabbed or shot.

All-out resistance is underway. More helicopters are arriving. The rumor that Fox ordered the PFP to back off appears false. The radio is calling for an ambulance at 1:50, someone badly wounded. A confrontation is taking place between the people and the PFP at 1:45.

In addition to everything else, the PFP is invading the panteon (cemetary) to make sure no body is regrouping there. Bad idea on Day of the Dead.

"This is the moment to reorganize" - the PFP is entering every area. The radio reports that the PFP is planting arms to make it look like the people are armed.

33. From Liberation News (RiseUp) via OSAG
PFP and Army, Out of Oaxaca
Long live the resistance of the barricades!

In spite of the harsh military operation to put an end to the "Oaxaca Commune," the valiant people of Oaxaca are resisting today by putting up barricades and confronting the occupiers at several points in the city. They have not succeeded in defeating it. That big resistance shows that it is possible to curb the PFP invasion, but also that in all the organizations of the country we have to go help strengthen our class brothers in this unequal battle.

The betrayal that the Rueda Pacheco agreement with the Interior Department (Gobernación) represents, so that the teachers would return to classes, dividing and weakening the movement of the APPO – in spite of the sit-in and the APPO hunger strike in the DF – has generated a lot of dissent among the thousands of militant educational workers who, in a principled manner and fulfilling the APPO agreements, are not returning to classes until the fall of the tyrant URO. No one in the APPO can go on saying that we must respect the decision that the teachers' leaders might take. Strike-breaking cannot be justified with the excuse of "trade union autonomy" of the
organizations. It was obvious that the return to classes would weaken the movement and encourage the repressive policy against the struggle. No negotiation with those who attack the people's struggle!

Let us break through the military siege on Oaxaca

An action on the national level that can mobilize against repression, like the one that forced Zedillo to halt the military offensive against the indigenous peoples and Zapatista peasants in Chiapas in 1994, is urgently needed. In all the movements in the states of the country, we ought to go to help the comrades of this big workers' and people's movement. On Sunday, October 29, several organizations blockaded the Lázaro Cárdenas Eje Central ("central axis") as a means of supporting Oaxaca. The students are already seizing departments and prep schools and CCHs (science and humanities high schools) and making barricades.

Now the trade union, peasant, social, and political organizations must carry out actions in their places of influence, like the seizure of border bridges and custom houses, seizing embassies, strikes, etc. (Mexican consulates overseas have been seized in countries of Europe and Latin America.) Although delayed, the EZLN has announced that it is joining this support and will blockade highways in the zones of Chiapas that it controls. Time is pressing, let us form brigades to work in the whole DF and let us increase international solidarity. Let us make the agreements we voted on in the national and international Solidarity Forum with the APPO in Oaxaca a reality.

On the results of this struggle which has held the state and federal government at bay for 5 months, depends the reorganization of the workers' and mass movement or a big fall. In many years, we had not seen a struggle as deep as this one, disputing the state, la Federación, over territorial control; and with organs of self-defense that infuriated the bourgeoisie. Let us coordinate with the normal school students of Ayotzinapa, Guerrero, who are confronting repression by the PRD government of Zeferino Torreblanca. A Caravan of Caravans that will arrive at Oaxaca City from the north, south, east and west, should be the aim of meetings like the Assembly of the Peoples of Mexico. Let us make international attention focus on Oaxaca. We have to arrive at the Oaxaca Zócalo to help our comrades recover that bastion of struggle that the APPO installed. With forceful actions, let us show the heroic comrades of Oaxaca that they are not alone!

Promote a national strike!

The unions must spare no effort in these decisive moments. Unfortunately, faced with savage repression, they failed to call a strike and mobilization, limiting themselves to declarations against the entry of the PFP. The comrades of Oaxaca must not be left alone! It is urgent that in their assemblies the unions now discuss the national strike to force Ulises Ruiz and the troops out of Oaxaca. The SME has already declared in its meeting with the Interior Department on Monday, October 30 that it agrees with the national strike. Rank and file electrical workers should discuss the date for this national day to make it a reality. But the university students' unions must also do like the students and join this action, promoting the universities' and teachers' strike (STUNAM, SITUAM, CHAPINGO, Bachilleres, CNTE). Let us pass from declarations to deeds. Let us vote on a tentative date now!

For a broad and democratic coordinating body of the actions of struggle

Together with the APPO, let us promote a coordinating body that can promote the necessary tasks to keep up the people's resistance in Oaxaca. Let us join forces for that. The different organizations in the DF and other states where we are, should elect their delegates to this coordinating body and vote in a united and democratic manner on the necessary tasks and actions. Let the APPO feel that it can rely completely on the organizations with which we unconditionally support its struggle. For its part, the APPO can help organize a national body that, independently of the interests of the parties of the Congress of the Union, moves forward toward a class-conscious and militant unity.

Ulises Ruiz and troops, out of Oaxaca!
Stop the arrests in the state! Freedom for political
prisoners!
Down with the agreements with the government that
weaken the movement!
For a Provisional Government of the APPO!
For a Revolutionary Constituent Assembly on the ruins
of the regime!
Long live the Commune of Oaxaca!

41. Wiley, are they retreating back to the airport or to the square?
Has the PFP left the city, entirely?

Breaking: The APPO Wins an Important Battle Against the PFP

The APPO has forced the PFP into a retreat from its attempted incursion into the Benito Juarez University. But the war is far from over.

After a six-hour siege on the Benito Juarez Autonomous University, which is the home Radio Universidad, voice of the APPO, the Federal Preventative Police (PFP) was forced to retreat just moments ago.

As helicopters, tanks, and scores of armed federal police approached the University campus, "la doctora," the now famous host of radio APPO, urged the citizens of Oaxaca to rush to the scene to aid in the defense of the campus and particularly, of the radio station.

Scores of neighbors and students reportedly surround the PFP troops. Simultaneously, APPO supporters in Mexico City marched from the hunger strikers' encampment near the Senate to the offices of the PFP to demand a retreat from the campus.

Mexican law prohibits the incursion of law enforcement into autonomous universities, unless requested by the university rector. The rector of the Benito Juarez University categorically rejects the presence of the PFP and did not give his approval to the agency to enter the campus.

Although it is unclear whether or not the retreat will be followed by a return to the scene tonight, one thing is quite clear at this moment; the APPO has dealt an important blow to the PFP and has proven that they are indeed capable of defeating the invading army.
