Hilliard A Strong Challenge To 5-Term GOP Incumbent (PA-5)
In Pennsylvania's sprawling 5th Congressional District, bigger than Vermont and Rhode Island put together, the 2006 election has for the first time stirred a Democrat to challenge the five-term incumbent, U.S. Rep. John Peterson, R-Pleasantville.

But former Jefferson County commissioner Don Hilliard has sworn off "special interest" contributions to his campaign and hasn't raised much from individuals. So the first Democrat to challenge Peterson since his open-seat triumph over Centre Hall Democrat Ruth Rudy a decade ago seems a longshot candidate.

While Peterson's campaign committee has nearly $600,000 -- nearly half from political committees and the rest from individuals -- Hilliard doesn't expect to raise $15,000. His name does not register on the Federal Election Commission Web site that tracks candidates and their finances.
